Scouting Report:

An unsigned Rockies 38th-round pick in 2014, Canning jumped straight into UCLA's rotation as a freshman with an 11-1 strikeout-walk ratio in 64 innings and hasn't looked back much since then. While the Bruins lack an explosive offense that would give him gaudy win totals, he had improved his consistency of stuff to become one of the nation's top starters as a junior. He's grown into his listed 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame and was among the national leaders in strikeouts with a four-pitch mix, with scouts at times seeing all four pitches as plus. Others consider his repertoire average to above-average, but scouts see him as a future starter with a clean arm and delivery. Canning has weapons and knows how to use them, pitching off his 90-94 mph four-seam fastball that features a high spin rate and peaks at 95. He throws plenty of strikes with it, showing average fastball command. That helps him consistently get ahead of hitters, who he can put away with either a slider, curveball or changeup. His change was a go-to secondary pitch as a sophomore, though he's thrown more breaking balls this spring, with the curveball usually ranking ahead of the slider according to many scouts. Like most UCLA aces under John Savage, Canning has shown durability under a robust workload, including 134-pitch shutout of rival Southern California in early May. Teams that see him as a future No. 3 starter, the high-end projection for him, will jump on him in the first round.

Perfect pick for #47. Ability to make the big leagues quickly, local, top talent that slid down due to a hopefully minimal risk, coming from a strong program.

Really liking this. We got the MLB-readyish college SP with at least mid-rotation upside and a hyper-talented young hitting prospect.

Can't wait to see what next two days bring.

Billy Eppler and new scouting director Matt Swanson grabbed the 2 best available players with both picks today. Canning did fall, however, due to a recent medical scare in his MRI, possibly due to being overworked at UCLA. If the arm issue goes away, the Angels make out like bandits. Potential #3 starter who can move quickly through the system.

Canning lead the Bruins in ERA, strikeouts and innings pitched and was an All-Pac-12 selection.

He needs to be signed, throw a game and shut down..   UCLA rode him pretty hard -- he needs the rest.

The Los Angeles Angels took Griffin Canning with the 47th pick of the 2017 MLB Draft.

This is a shocker. Canning had his stock slide late because of concerns about his overuse at UCLA, but it was though to be more of a drop into the late first, not the middle of the second round. With a plus fastball and change and the ability to throw strikes with two other pitches, this could be one heck of a steal for the Angels.

The Angels had an A+ day-1 draft day IMO.

Well the Angels seem quite comfortable with shoulder issues (e.g. Alex Meyer) so if Eppler is good I'm good.

What, exactly, is the concern over his health? Did he miss any starts at UCLA? Did his velocity drop?

I'd assume it was some sort of structural damage like what the Astros saw with Brady Aiken. He didn't miss any starts or suffer a drop in velocity before the draft either.

Asked about concerns regarding Griffin Canning's MRI, Swanson said, "To the best of our knowledge, we’re comfortable with it." #Angels

If this guy is cleared by the Angels medical staff he'll need triple bypass and a kidney transplant before 2018.

But all joking aside I think the Angels did quite well with their picks today.

From what I have heard, there is a shoulder issue that led some scouts to think he wouldn't get drafted Day 1. Clearly, the Angels aren't as afraid or they're willing to take the risk. Here's a good article on some college pitchers and their usage, which illustrates some of the worries with Canning. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-workloads-of-2017s-top-draft-prospects/

Everyone under 30 has two last names.

Because women are stupid and men have no balls.  Now 1/2 of the country's young people have a former president's last name as their first name.  Very sad.  Very stupid.

women are stupid and men have no balls. well, a statement like that just goes to show that men can be stupid, too.

No, and No...    Just not a big guy and his MRI showed something that created risk.   Whether it was simply signs of fatigue or an issue -- nobody has any real knowledge of.
