Stealing bases vs. hit and run

Recommended Posts

Most frustrating thing is to watch Trout get doubled up on the bases when he is on 1st base.

Is Trout slower because of the weight? I can't understand why Trout is being chained to the bases. Last season he was off to the races running early in the count not on freaking 2-2 or 3-2 counts

Seriously what is the difference between the steal and the hit and run? I don't know and we always get thrown out on the hit and run.

In a hit and run the runner generally has a smaller lead and waits to take off until the pitcher has committed to throwing to the plate. The batter is obligated to try to make contact even on a bad pitch to prevent the runner from being thrown out. Usually used with slower runners (like trumbo) and or in counts where fastballs are expected to be thrown.

In a straight steal, runner takes off at his own discretion typically take a bigger jump. Runner typically takes off before the pitcher throws, therefore a pickoff attempt or a pitch out may be used by the pitcher to counter. In this case the batter's approach is only to hit if they can make quality contact for a hit, otherwise take pitches so the runner can take the extra base.

On a hit and run the runner has to make sure that the pitcher is going home before taking off.  They get a late jump almost always and have a smaller lead.  The importance is that the batter gets the bat on the ball.
