Verlander Salary Dump?

Recommended Posts

With Mike Illitch passing away the Tigers are most likely going to be looking to dump salary.  Justin Verlander is under contract for $28 million for the next 3 years and a possible $22 million in 2020.  He was almost worth it last year with a 6.6 WAR but certainly not the previous two years.   First question, how much would the Tigers need to cover for it be worth it for the Angels? The primary premise is that it wouldn't cost us prospects if we took on salary.

Second question, how many seconds after seeing Verlander's name did you start working up a lame and predictable comment about Kate Upton?

2017 34 Detroit Tigers $28,000,000
2018 35 Detroit Tigers $28,000,000
2019 36 Detroit Tigers $28,000,000
2020 37 Detroit Tigers *$22,000,000   $22M Vesting Option 2020 option guaranteed with top 5 finish in 2019 Cy Young vote

Verlander had surplus value last year. Tigers aren't just going to give him away let alone eat salary to do so.

This is a great article on it.

great article but I think they may be overvaluing free agents.  $30 million for WAR?

More than likely, Verlander will be a deadline deal to a contending team that will want that last piece.  And he will cost something.  Players of his caliber are probably not going to be salary dumps, especially since it looks like he's back on track.  Now if he has a 4.00+ ERA, 1.4 WHIP , then it might be a different story.

The Pujols contract is on the books for the duration of the Verlander contract plus one year, and it accelerates, hitting $30M by 2021, the final year of the deal. If the Tigers are truly looking to dump salary, they aren't going to eat much of Verlander's contract - otherwise what's the point? A team like the Yankees might be willing to take on that kind of money.

Verlander is already 34 years old. The Tigers overpaid to have him stay in Detroit.
