California blackouts pull plug on 2 million as heat wave bakes state

California's electrical providers, reporting "an energy shortfall" during a prolonged heat wave, imposed rolling blackouts Friday that have impacted at least 2 million people, authorities said.

The California Independent System Operator, which manages the power grid, declared an emergency shortly after 6:30 p.m. and directed utilities around the state to slash their power loads by 1,000 megawatts. The resulting outages affected an estimated 750,000 homes.

Pacific Gas & Electric, the state's largest utility, tweeted that it would turn off power to about 220,000 customers in rotating outages for about an hour at a time. Other utilities were told to do the same.

“Unfortunately, because of the emergency nature of this, we weren’t able to notify customers in advance,” Jeff Smith, a company spokesman, said in a telephone interview with Bloomberg.

The outages occurred for 60 to 90 minutes on a rotating basis through the utility’s northern and central California service territory, he said.

Good thing they don't do that here.

And what if you need to charge your car?

Two girls attending a birthday pool party in California were fatally shot and three others were wounded, according to reports.

The girls, Elayna Saidee, 12, and Makeliah Osorno, 11, were the innocent victims of gang violence that took place Thursday night in a backyard in Delano, KGET-TV reported Friday.

“It’s a hallmark gang-style shooting,” Delano Police Chief Robert Nevarez told the station. “The suspect arrives in a tan Toyota Corolla or Camry, and according to some witnesses one of the persons got out of the vehicle and went into the yard area and began firing and then quickly left.”

We better vote for some democrats

If Prop 13 is reversed there will be a wave of business owners leaving the state like never seen before. The irony is that tax revenue would probably decrease as commercial and industrial property values would drop like a rock.

Can you imagine telling the restaurant owner.  Hey, sorry to hear you got hit hard by the Rona closures.  But your parcel of land was valued at 1980 values.  You owe an extra $10,000 in property taxes after the reassessment.

It would be disastrous.

Again, our clowns in sacramento want to bring in more money from taxpayers without cutting any kind of spending.

It's for the greater good comrade.

Opinion piece.  But at least he's spotlighting some ballot measures, which are horrible.  BTW, the assault on Prop 13 has begun.

California ballot contains four unconstitutional propositions

I was all on board to agree with this but I think his arguments are on shaky legal ground.

I can't see a court ruling that a tax on property is a denial of the constitutions right to own property (which is 2 of the 4 props). I agree with him on the affirmative action one, which god willing should be a slam dunk. I think his take on the ride share one is on tenuous ground also. We have the right to freely enter into a contract but there are plenty of limits imposed upon that right by the government, particularly in the job sector.

Every homeowner retiree below upper class would have to move out of the state because their taxes would triple or more. This is the kind of greed that has taken over the government by expanding beyond reasonable expectation of being funded.

Something doesn't sound right.  To get on prison duty, you have to be low risk and with good behavior.  Those types of people have been released a long time ago due to covid.

Yeah I was going to say it may be because we have a lot less prisoners to use. Lol at blaming it on COVID and they’ll probably throw so blame towards Trump’s way too
