Wait, wasn't Deolis Guerra pretty solid for us last year, or am I thinking of someone else?

What's the deal on this Austin Adams kid?

Adams had a WHIP of almost 1.9 last year, gave up 2.5HR/9 and 3.4BB/9. Only 18 innings.Career WHIP of 1.6. Only 58 IP total.

Took him to age 27 to reach the bigs. Will turn 31 in August.

Is this one of those gambles that we can retain him but remove him from the 40 man roster?

Still strange. Guerra seemed pretty good. Certainly good enough for THIS pen.

One of the reports is saying it's because Deolis is out of options.  I can see that as being important as I suspect we will be moving pieces in and out of the pen.  This Adams guy throws hard so there might be an attraction to that also.

Since Adams is out of options, it's probably safe to say that he will be DFA'd before too long. I don't see him making the club to start the season.

Well, I don't get the move. Other than Guerra doesn't throw extremely hard (a tick above 90mph) and doesn't miss many bats! Though I liked him in the bully and he rarely walked anyone! Adams may throw harder but that doesn't make him the better pitcher as he is older. They are both out of options like whats been stated so I think it's more a coin flip at this point and if they can sneak Guerra through Waivers great he can go down to SPT and make a case to being in the bullpen. If Adams flunks out no great loss its a PTBnL or Cash which pretty much means no one important! And could in fact be Adams back to Cleveland if he doesn't make the opening day roster with us..... (HA! I've seen this happen way back in the day). I think we are mainly looking for power arms toss them against a wall and hope 3 new ones stick.

Eppler and Co. must've thought that Guerra had an outside shot at best at making the pen - and that if he did make the pen, the upside there was limited. So more than likely, he was going to be goon soon if not sooner. With Adams, same deal - slim chance at making the pen but if he makes the pen, then he would have pitched an impressive spring and would have a lot more upside to offer.

On a more positive note, Adams has had plenty of success in Triple-A, where he’s spent parts of three seasons. In that time, he’s tossed 103 2/3 innings of relief, logging a 3.47 ERA with 9.5 K/9 against 2.8 BB/9. He’s also averaged better than 96 mph on his fastball in recent seasons. Adams will join an unsettled bullpen mix with the Halos, where Huston StreetCam BedrosianJ.C. Ramirez and Andrew Bailey seem like the only right-handers that have spots locked down at this time.
