Angels Sign Yusmeiro Petit

In an article published last year titled, "The Hardest Pitches in Baseball to Lay Off," Petit's Curveball made the list.

Curveball – Yusmeiro Petit

  • Thrown out of the zone: 68% of the time
  • Swung at, when out of the zone: 61% of the time
  • Meaning: 42% of the time this pitch is thrown, it’s both a) out of the zone and B) swung at

Petit has, by far, the most extreme chase rate numbers for any curveball in the game. And, surprise, it’s another pitch about which Eno has written! Eno is pretty good at this stuff. In what is one of my favorite pieces in recent memory, Eno wrote about Petit’s “invisiball” — the ability he has to momentarily hide the ball with his mechanics, which can be seen in this illuminating series of screencaps:

Just like Ziegler, there’s the deception, and then there’s the location:

Petit is able to expand that outside edge of the plate to right-handed batters, as seen in the .gif above to Yadier Molina. Of the 121 pitchers who threw at least 200 curveballs last year, Petit’s has the very highest swing rate, by 11 percentage points (!!!), a whiff rate in the upper 25%, and the very highest pop-up rate.

It's not necessarily the delivery it's the arm slot (3/4) and his curve ball. Add in the swing rate and add in that a hitter has less time to figure out if its a fastball or curve.

Why we taught hitting the old school box theory. Doesn't matter what the pitcher does delivery wise. Watch the release during warm ups and place a box at the exit spot. shoulder, side, or hip, very rare occasions knee. as then you only need to worry about what is coming at you and watch the spin of the ball.

Petit was in the midst of a solid season with the Nats and carried a sub-3.00 ERA into the month of August, but he was used sparingly down the stretch and hit hard when he did take the hill. Of the 31 earned runs he allowed last year, 16 came in his final 10 appearances (12 1/3 innings). Petit’s deal with the Nationals contained a $3MM vesting option for the 2017 campaign, and his sparse usage down the stretch may simply have been a reflection that the Nats didn’t wish to see that option lock in.

Nice pick up....

This does seem to be Eppler's plan (power in numbers).    If he is right, and the team ends up not spending much on the bullpen, he will look like a genius.

I like to use the analogy of (Turn them and Burn them).... Let them sort themselves out!..... Sometimes, it works! Sometimes, it doesn't!.... Sometimes, you're left still holding the bag.

I'm happy with all of the pick ups on the cheap but we are adding yet another guy that has played for at least 4 other teams. Maybin, Revere, Chavez, Valbuena and Norris have all done that. It's not like they're suddenly going to blossom into something special because they're now playing for us. Remember that all of these guys were very easy to acquire. Let's see how they do in an Angels uniform.

couple of thing that I found interesting.

he was terrible as a starter in limited action for 2014 but good there in 2013.

Starting in 2014, he was really good as reliever that year and solid in 2015.  Last year he struggled in that short stint, but the interesting thing is that he has slowly been decreasing the use of his curve.  Last year to the point that he actually threw his slider more often.  Which, if I had to guess, was something that the Nats made happen.

But this is more of the same in a good way with these fringy starter/relief guys.  Would seriously love to see Petit, Norris, Pounders, Chavez, Meyer and Ramirez form some sort of rotation where they man the 5th spot and get 2-3 inning appearances elsewhere.  Obviously, the roster limits negate our ability to have them all available, but you can shuffle guys back and forth from SLC.

Honestly I already think he is a genius simply based on the number of moves, the execution on upside, and the massive volume of acquisitions while staying under the Luxury Tax. Really impressive even if it all doesn't work out.

they played a little bit of this game last year with Nava, Gentry, Petit, Guerra, Guerra, Alburquerque, Ramirez, Wright, Ortega, Buss, Marte, Valdez etc.  Noticeably absent from that group is anything remotely resembling a starter except for maybe wright and we didn't have anything in AAA either.  After starting spring with a potential rotation of Richards, Heaney, Wilson, Shoe and Santiago with Skaggs, Trop and Weaver as backups then at one point having a rotation of Shoe, Weaver, Chacin, Santiago, and Lincecum has left Eppler a little shell shocked.

By attrition, injury and trades we essentially lost 5 rotation arms from last year (santiago, weaver, wilson, trop and heaney).  Regardless of how they performed, that's just a lot of innings to make up.

Since around the middle of 2016, Eppler has added Meyer, Nolasco, Chavez, Norris, Petit, Ramirez, Pounders, Campos, Wright, Lamb, and Banuelos.  A couple of those guys have to work out right?

Yep. Add Nate Smith and you have a bunch of guys vying for the final spot in the rotation.

I love it!

Agreed.

I guess the difference for me this year vs. last year is in the total execution and opportunity cost execution (Maybin and Espinosa being the prime examples). It's like they had a great road map built and options identified and they systematically added to the team in a shrewd and productive manner. That's what impressed me the most.

stop·gap
ˈstäpˌɡap/
noun
  1. a temporary way of dealing with a problem or satisfying a need.
"transplants are only a stopgap until more sophisticated alternatives can work"
synonyms: temporary solution/fix, expedient, makeshift; More

But yeah -- people are totally expecting players to "blossom" into something special....
