As a tribute to former Athletic and MLB Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson, the Oakland A’s will name the field at the Oakland Coliseum “Rickey Henderson Field.” The team will dedicate Rickey Henderson Field during a special pregame ceremony on Opening Night, April 3, before the A’s play host to the Los Angeles Angels. Henderson will also serve as a Special Assistant to the President.

rickey henderson was my favorite player as a kid. i loved everything about him, from the way he played the game to his idiosyncratic personality. people like to give him a hard time, but i always reply with, you show me another mlb all century team member who delayed his induction into the hof so that he could go play baseball for the san diego surf dawgs of the golden baseball league. if that ain't love of the game, then nothing is.

i was lucky enough to have been at several of the games where he set some all time records. i remember him saying when he broke the runs scored record that it was the most meaningful record for him, because that's what his job boiled down to and that scoring a run was the entire point of the game.

I ask because I just bought a house in the Boise area. They have a short season A team, but I was REALLY disappointed to find that Boise State HAS NO BASEBALL TEAM!!! Of course, the town (and state) are football crazy.......but they have a frickin' soccer team, fer cryin' out loud! Why no baseball, I have no idea.

So is it going to be called "Ricky Henderson Field at The O.co Colisseum"? If so, it will give The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim a run for their money as the most ridiculous name in baseball.

Probably a lot of weather issues, especially early in the season.

Played for the Hawks in 1987.At the time the Hawks were better known for churning out players to MLB teams than the Reno Silver Sox which were the other independent team in the Cal League at the time (which was my thought process in trying out and eventually signing)... Also, Yes, Boise State has no baseball team. There was talk about bringing baseball to the school in 2014 they even went so far as to start speaking with some very successful coaches in the college and high school ranks (locally).. However, it has yet to come to fruition. I would guess, most notably due to their football team bringing a ton of $$$ into the school and baseball is kind of a loss leader in that area for college sports and division. When you think of the amount of money that comes into a school for the sport and the amount that goes out. Also, the weather and training during the off season requires more scheduling with the other sports.

On a serious note, I miss players like Rickey Henderson - and Tim Raines, and even Kenny Lofton: 70+ bases a year, some power, getting on base all the time. Really dynamic players.

Rickey had three years in which he hit at least 24 HR and 65 SB. Crazy.

The years I remember him on the A's were around the same time the Angels kinda sucked.  Late 80's to mid 90's.  So I had no problem rooting for the guy as we weren't playing meaningful games against the A's.  (Though leading off a game with a home run did sting.)
