Stop Trying to Make Cowart Happen

Recommended Posts

Based on this Ken Rosenthal article it doesn't look like Cowart is ever going to work out as a starting third baseman

Starting in 2018, Valbuena likely will become the Angels’ regular third baseman; Escobar is entering his free-agent year.

Clearly the Angels don't have much faith in his bat and, frankly, they don't have any reason to.

That said, I could see him catching on with some team as a bench player and maybe having another developmental leap in his late 20s to being a passable major leaguer. Or he could just float in AAA for a few years and never really make it as a major leaguer. But right now he's looking like Brandon Wood, Part 2, although unlike Wood he never really looked all that great.

Or he could try to convert back to pitching.

Had he been a 4th round draft pick he'd have been moved out a long time ago.

He's obviously the last layer of depth at this point, and he could get DFAed at any point and it wouldn't surprise me, but he could still force the issue with a great campaign at SLC, which we all should be rooting for. I imagine he gets cut before he sees any significant amount of playing time in Anaheim again, even if he's doing well in AAA.

Cowart is pennington's replacement.  Can play all four IF positions and probably corner OF in a pinch if needed.  No bat but it could get better.  They just aren't going to wait to find out.  Impressively, he and 0 bb and a 26.5% k rate in his limited action last year.  That's hard to do.  Entering his age 25yo season with a couple options.  No need to do anything with him really.  You've also got Sherman Johnson available for that role soon as well and he can at least draw a walk.  Not sure if anyone is trying to make Cowart happen.

Just people here who are expecting every Prospect to succeed.

The only reason people were wanting Cowart is that before these signings, he was only only 3rd baseman that the team had that could actually play good defense. That scenario has now changed.
