NEW YORK -- A record six teams are paying baseball's luxury tax this season, led by the Los Angeles Dodgers at $31.8 million and the New York Yankees at $27.4 million.

The number of teams over the threshold topped last year's mark of four. This year's total tax was $74 million.

I think he'd go over for the right player, but only for one year. If we could say get a legit ace in free agency, they may have done that this year, knowing that Hamilton's contract came off next year, and they'd be back under the tax, but there was not a guy like that out there to be had in free agency.

In fact, other than possibly closer, I don't see a major free agent that fits any of our needs out there, which is why the deals for Maybin, Espinosa, and Maldonado all look pretty good. I wanted a lefty bat, but that didn't happen.
