Mike Trout's current contract.....

Mike Trout's agent said that they were comfortable with the terms of his current contract because it gives him financial security and leaves his options open.

Should Arte try to extend Trouts' current deal with more years and money now?

Here's my concern....

If Arte waits too long we could lose out big time. If Trout wants to stay as an Angel with a lifetime deal then what's wrong with getting it done now. If Trout doesn't plan on spending his entire career here then the Angels should start dangling a carrot to teams that Trout would approve trades to.

Here we go.... but why trade him CALZONE?

Trout's contract ends in 2020. If they can't get him to commit to an extension now then they need to seriously start considering the alternative plan in the very near future.

Trouts trade value today could bring back a huge return if they are patient and take their time to negotiate with the right team. It would be a huge gamble to try to wait it out and move him in a last minute trade deadline deal in July of 2020. So in reality we have a 2-year window to get something done and 2019 will be treated like a contract year for Trout because he would have to be moved before the deadline in 2020. Teams will be much more reluctant to give up too much for Trout in 2020 if they fear that they can't extend him.

If we wait too long to move him Trout may also say no to any trade knowing that he will be a pending free agent anyway.

Arte needs to extend him sooner than later or we may just end up with just a draft pick.

Yes I know..... you don't trade a player like Trout but.......he might force the Angels to do just that.

The Angels wanted a longer term deal when they agreed to the current contract. I'm sure they'd love to get an extension now but why would Mike want to give up signing a long term huge money deal in his prime years?  He might be open to signing one towards the end of the current deal but why would he do it now?

I think there is a reasonable chance - provided Trout has at least some interest - that an extension happens well before the current one is up. It wouldn't surprised me if Arte and Billy have figures in mind and start casually throwing numbers at Trout's agent every few months or offseason.

Let's imagine Mike Trout's perspective. He's the best player in baseball, 25 years old and is going to average over $30 million a year over the next four years, and will have made about $150 million by his 29th birthday, playing baseball. His one problem is that his team kind of sucks, and to a lesser degree that he plays far from his hometown.

So if you're Mike Trout, and Arte Moreno offers you an extension, do you take it and be locked into a shitty team on the other coast, or do you enjoy the next few years and re-assess in 2020? If the Angels still suck, he can make as much or more money playing for the Yankees or his favorite growing up, the Phillies.

So yeah, I don't see a lot of incentive for him to say anything more than, "Let's talk in a few years. Right now focus on improving the Angels." I imagine even if Arte says, "Let's scrap your current contract and I'll give you 12/$500M," Trout would say, "Thanks for the offer, but I'm making plenty of money. I just want to play baseball and win the World Series."

The only way the Angels have a chance of keeping Trout is if the entire organization turns around and becomes a major winner by 2020. Otherwise, he's gone. Even if they're winning 90+ games in 2020 with a strong farm system and a solid core of players, Trout still might leave. But if they don't improve by then, why would he possibly stay?

So here's my view: Stop worrying about a Trout extension, because it probably won't happen for a few years, and only then if the organization improves substantially. And you know what? If we're still floundering in 3-4 years, I wouldn't blame Trout one bit if he left for greener pastures.

You simply don't trade him yet.  You will never get close to fair value for him.  What team has three 5 WAR players that are affordable and at the beginning of their prime to trade for him?

Hell how many teams have three 5 WAR players?  Cubs? Rizzo, Bryant and Arrieta?  Maybe the Red Sox?

If Trout is here towards the end of his contract he won't need to sign an extension. He can wait and negotiate the biggest deal in MLB history at the end.

Arte should extend him now.

As for trading him, you wait until 2020. And Stradling, it won't be for 5 WAR players if it happens then. Maybe in the offseason now the Angels could get a package of one or two younger stars and a few prospects, but at the point it becomes worth it for the Angels, it is no longer worth it for the other team.

But in 2020, if the Angels suck, they could get quite a package for him in July. Imagine taking on Trout at the trade deadline, how that would boost a team's playoff run. If he's still as good as he is now, the Angels would probably get a massive haul of prospects. Again, if they suck and Trout hasn't extended, you have to trade him by July at the latest. Four or five grade B to A prospects is much better than one draft pick.

Wrong, any team that is willing to trade for him in 2020 knows they will have to extend him. They can just wait 3 months and just buy him outright. Keep in mind that Trout will have to approve any deal and there will only be a small shortlist of teams with the money to keep him. Arte needs to get something done sooner than later. Extend him or trade him.

I disagree. The Angels can get a big haul in 2020 at the trade deadline--it has happened before and it will happen again. And Trout isn't just any player. Let's say the Yankees are in the playoff hunt in 2020...don't you think they'd overturn their coffers to get Trout, especially when they know they can extend him? Or the Phillies or Red Sox?

Now they wouldn't get the same haul they'd get, say, this offseason, but I'm of the view that you don't trade Trout unless you absolutely have to--meaning, unless it is clear that he's going to leave anyway. The Angels have him for four years...a lot can happen to an organization in that time. He's 25 years old, not 30, meaning he's young enough to be part of any future, short or long-term. You don't trade him, not now, not in 2017 or 2018, or even 2019. The very earliest I would consider it is between 2019 and 2020, and only then if the organization is an absolute disaster and someone makes the Angels an offer they can't refuse. But I don't expect that to be the case.

And if Trout says no to a trade in 2020 we get nothing but a draft pick. Right?

As other people pointed out this is about 2.5 years too early.  The team should approach him about an extension before the 2019 season and if he isn't interested then you look to move him before the trade deadline if they're out of the playoff race.  Otherwise you keep him, hope you can compete and that he signs an extension some time in 2020.

It's a risk you've got to take. But Trout wouldn't say no to a trade to a contender in 2020, especially if that contender was the Yankees or Phillies or Red Sox. Maybe you only get a good haul rather than a great one, but I think the least the Angels would get at the deadline in 2020 would be a grade A prospect and several grade Bs, which is still better than a draft pick.

There is absolutely no reason for Trout to sign an extension in 2020 when he can negotiate with any team he wants to after that season. Including the Angels.

Like I said, you hope you compete in 2019 and he changes his mind.  If he doesn't then you trade him before the deadline in 2020.  Either way this is like worrying about what your college major is going to be when you're freshman in high school.  It could play out so many different ways and it's impossible to say right now.

This could have been a reason why we didn't spend money on a big name LF last offseason in order to free up long term payroll commitments but that is a stretch to be honest.

Been saying this for awhile now. Harper and machado are kind of tying hands where theyre at, but i think the nats know harper will go where the money is (and i cant blame him). The Os are tied up because tbe davis deal and the pendinf machado deal are going to make up a huge chunk of their payroll very shortly.

The angels right now know they have to spend to fix things, but they also know trouts contract will cost them pujols money, plus say torii hunters contract here very shortly (within about 2 more years, tops).

Trout will possibly (even probably) cost them 400 million if they extend him. That aint chump change. And in reality, it doesnt even improve the team so much as it just keeps him here (which is worth it in itself).

There you go making it personal again. WTF is wrong with you? Can't you just discuss the subject and bring some value to the discussion. Geez

Sorry, I didn't realize you had gone full blown feline.  My point is you're getting way ahead of yourself.   By all means feel free to continue to discuss this very pressing matter the next four years...   I won't have anything of value to add until it's actually an issue sometime in 2019...

Happy now?
