I remember witnessing many brawls at the Big A back in the late 70's / early 80's. Carew and Grich were almost always the first two out of the dugout. The action back then wasn't only limited to the field. When the Yankees or Red Sox were in town, I remember practically entire sections going at it. It's amazing that this stuff was sort of routine back then, but I remember it quite well. It's probably like trying to tell someone under 30 how violent the NHL was like back then, but you had to be there to see that what would be shocking by today's standards was just part of the game.

The NHL did sort of mirror Slapshot.   Dave Schultz had some 450 penalty minutes one year in the mid 1970s.  What's crazy is that he also averaged a +22 +/- over a 3 year stretch in the mid 1970s.

Kopitar may not even reach 450 penalty minutes for his career, by the time he retires.
