Arkansas Travelers are new Mariners AA Affiliate

The Diamondbacks took over the Mariners previous affiliate in the AA Southern League a few days ago, and now the Mariners take ours. This sort of stuff happens, but I suppose we get Mobile now? If so, we need to change the name. BayBears is an awful awful awful name.

Calscuf, the minor league teams are not owned by the Major league franchise, so they sign contracts. If they can get better terms, they move on. In the case of Rancho Cucamonga, they wanted a major league team to invest in the ownership of the franchise. That's what I was told anyway. The Dodgers did that, while Arte said no. So we got bumped to San Bernardino.

Other times, the team is owned by the major league franchise and it moves cities. Then the old city gets a new team. There are more issues than just money. No one wants to play in Bakersfield in the Cal League because their stadium is so sub par, despite being in possibly the 2nd largest market in the league. (San Jose being #1).

I understand the MiLB teams are independently owned.  I'm just saying that you could build a fan base in those markets if you had more stability as affiliates and you marketed the MLB team, which could benefit both the parent team and the MiLB teams.

'come watch Angels prospects who will likely be with the Braves by the time they make it to the majors'

I honestly don't think those teams care whose major league team they represent. It's not like the Cal League where having Dodgers or Angels or Padres clearly boosts your attendance. In Iowa or Arkansas, think about how far away the team is that they follow? If you're not the Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves or Houston Astros affiliate, it doesn't really matter where you get your players from.

Too bad some team doesn't take over Salt Lake from us, so we could get a AAA field closer to sea level. Pitching and hitting at high elevation isn't ideal baseball conditions.

They could be stuck with a name like 51s, which is universally hated and one that no one locally identifies with.

There's quite a bit of separation at all the varying facilities as well. Some are decrepit, some are state of the art, etc.

I think overall there are just so many outside dynamics controlling affiliation it makes it difficult to create any real advantages.

But yeah, I agree, wish it was something done more often, like Pawtucket and the Sox.

Hank Aaron Stadium Mobile Bay Bears 2013

Runs 0.961

HR 1.119

Hits 1.015

Note: A park factor of 1.000 is considered neutral and represented an equal number of runs/homers/hits at home as on the road. A factor over 1.000 favors hitters, while a factor under 1.000 favors pitchers.

Mobile is at least a little easier on the hitters.

I am getting leery of SLC as the AAA location.   Wish it could be something like either Las Vegas or better for pitchers San Jose.

The problem here is the facilities. Cashman Field is a dump, the batting cage is literally in the parking lot, to call the clubhouse substandard would be understating the issue, and the surrounding neighborhood contains the largest homeless encampment in the city. The lack of a concrete plan to replace the ballpark is the main reason that the Dodgers left. As it stands now, Las Vegas is always the last choice for AAA affiliation, the place that teams settle for when there is nowhere else to go. We have the Mets now because the people in Buffalo wanted them out, and Toronto's contract with Las Vegas was running out at the same time.

The Mets just re-upped for two years, presumably due to a lack of other options.

Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile will be a much better test for Angels pitchers moving up from the Cal League than Dickey International Airport in Little Rock ever was. They'll definitely have to learn to pitch more tightly to lefties, with the fence just 310 feet away in right. The Southern League has a different set of farm systems than the Texas League. The Baby Halos won't be facing Royals, Cards, Padres, Rangers, Mariners, Astros. A's or Dodgers anymore. The Southern League's South Division includes Brewers, Marlins, Braves and Reds. North is White Sox, Twins, D-Backs, Rays and Cubs.
