Cerritos Plane Crash

Recommended Posts

I was an airline employee working at SNA that day..flights were diverted and re-routed all around the LA-OC-IE area. Even though that flight was headed into LAX, when word got out of a crash, panicked people descended on us wondering which flight it was, which airline, etc..

So yeah...I remember that day well.

When working for an airline at an airport, it's the most dreaded thing there is. I'm glad I got through my years without dealing with an incident like that.

Yeah...I'd forgotten about that...man, that day was a mess. The people I worked with at SNA, we had all rented a beach house together on the Peninsula for the week. We had planned all summer for it, and had food and booze and everything you needed for an end of summer bash in Newport Beach.

We ended up with a flight crew who was diverted away from LAX, and some NTSB people who broke/bent rules and landed their small jet after curfew, staying with us that night. We all stood out on the patio and watched the fires from the riots up in downtown HB.

That must have been a bad day to be a cop, too.

Was talking to a few old timers at work a few years back about it, and them mentioned how much chaos it was because just after it happened, and north county agencies started sending help, the HB riots started and everyone got caught getting redirected to one or the other.

Was that back when the skinheads used to be an issue under the pier? I remember going to HB during the summers and they were an issue at night.

Not too sure, was before my time. When i was younger i know the punk/skin scene was a pretty big deal, but i think that day was kind of just a mix of beach types. There was some big surf event for the holiday weekend and i think it just got really out of hand. Similar to a few years back, but a lot bigger.

There was also a riot at the pier and main beach in 1969, Easter weekend. I was a kid fishing off the pier that day (I grew up in HB) and got my first taste of tear gas and police brutality (and yes it was brutal, swinging clubs at anyone who happened to be there, they totally panicked)

Here's an article on the 86 riot, that even mentions that 69 riot.
