Strange Trade

Kershaw's personal catcher, A.J. Ellis, to the Phillies for Carlos Ruiz, who's about 100 years old.

Dogs also give up a pitching prospect and player to be named later.

Kershaw and Ellis were both in tears afterwards. Kershaw is "shocked" and Ellis is "absolutely devastated"

Okay, maybe I posted this too quickly? He hasn't been Kershaw's personal catcher this year??

Ellis had caught 82.0 of Kershaw's 121.0ip this year.  Kersh had an era of 1.32 with ellis with 5 bb and 95k.  Kersh has a 2.84 era with Grandal.  His career era with Ellis is 1.97 in 829.0 ip.

In all honesty, as bullshit as it sounds, pitchers swear by "their" catcher. 

We laugh at it a lot, but mathis is still a pro for a reason. We cant see it...but its there

When Greg Maddux was with the Braves, he hated pitching when Javier Lopez caught. Eddie Perez made a pretty nice career out of just catching Maddux.

Not a good time to mess with your aces catcher and your team chemistry. AJ was apparently one of the clubhouse favorites. I understand Ruiz is a better hitter but is he really that much better that you'd be willing to potentially upset some teammates (and your ace)?
 

Oh and they were 1 out from being no-hit last night against the Giants. A nice start to life after this weird trade!

This tells me they don't have much confidence in Mershaw returning this season.

People who think this is a big deal are massively underestimating Kershaw. He would still be the best pitcher in baseball even if any of us were catching him.

Only if you have no idea how to win and were just tossing dolla' bills at the wall in hopes of breaking through to your first NL Championship series in almost 3 decades?....

Oh yeah, there is merit in that argument. I'm 50/50 on it, they did get somewhat better and gave up nothing of concern to do so but it's debatable whether that was worth the headaches. But people acting like Ellis is a big factor in Kershaw's success are overstating it. Kershaw is the reason for Kershaw's success.

They've been to 3 NLCS in the last 8 years.

Heard on the radio a bit ago that his ERA this year with AJ is 1.97 and with Grandal is 1.98. His overall ERA is somehow 1.79 though. But anwyays, he has the exact same ERA almost. I think the biggest thing is just upsetting chemistry. They said AJ and everyone were sobbing when they found out yesterday. I could see messing with chemistry for a bigger name, but not Carlos Ruiz.
