Just happened.  6.2.  So pretty small in Southern California standards.  But with Italy and all their old concrete, most likely unreinforced, buildings. 

Just got a news alert.  Says the town where it hit "is half gone."

Horrible.  Prayers go out to them.  Hopefully this number won't go up.

Just scanning the news headlines, there's one about children heard screaming from the rubble. I can't bear to read these stories.

Just horrible. And to think there could be such high death tolls in a first-world country.

They lived in a 16th century city. The only way to make it earthquake resistant is to level it and start over. Looks like Nature took care of the first step.

Saw this on the news this afternoon.

Notice how the top of the picture is the new part of the town, and it looks barely touched.

saw on the news they found a ten or twelve year old girl in the rubble yesterday and were able to save her.

seeing all of those crumbling buildings reminded me of the climactic scene of the first daniel craig james bond movie, casino royale.

Scary, I was just there.

Lot of old stone buildings, not exactly a mecca of earthquake retrofitting.

How terrible.

The beauty of the ancient cities lie in their history and design, not so much the soundness of the architecture. You see some of the most ridiculous wiring going on as they try to retrofit modern electricity to medieval or Renaissance times . A little scary but when you think of it not much fire damage can come from a building made almost entirely of quarry stone.
