I thought this would be a fun experiment. I've always said that a baseball manager effects the least amount of games a year. I was curious, how many wins does a good manager win you on a given year?

How you objectively measure.  If a team wins how do we know if it's a manager or the playoffs.  A lot of managing can not be measured.

That's the point. What do you think a manager actually brings to the table. How many wins can a manager get you himself a year.

you don't want to do that because then people will be pissed that Mike wins more games than the pythag.

I didn't know Mattingly's nickname was Pythag. =)

In all seriousness, why are you still defending Scioscia like he's your brother?   I'm not saying this to be a dick, just genuinely curious.  Yes, I wish Scioscia were gone, but I've moved on to other things the last few years to occupy my time.  You're still here on what seems like a daily basis defending him against all criticism.

Depends on a ton of variables. At the end of the day, the guys on the field win or lose. A bad manager can put the wrong guys on the field, though...

Yes they can, Mike doesn't have that luxury this year or last.

Not against all criticism only the ridiculous criticism.  You guys seem to think that if another manager was brought in everything would be better and that this person would be flawless and push all the right buttons.  Guess what, that person doesn't exist.  I already said when it all went down I would have rather kept Dipoto over Scioscia, but when I really sit back and look at it, Jerry sucked horribly bad at his job.  I want a new manager mainly because it wouldn't change a thing except the bitching on the board would change a little bit.  Also I defend him because I am bored and I don't agree with the notion he has the impact people think he has.  I think of all of the "fire Scioscia" people on the board, I only see eye to eye on other topics related to the team with one or two of them.

This statement alone shows you aren't really wanting a true response.

Like I said you can't quantify because the success of the manager come from strategic calls

Which I don't think matter more than a handful of games.

But more importantly he has to deal with personalities and egos.  He has to convince players to accept their roles.  A lot of that is psychological and you really can't measure it.

Mp, I totally get it, my name is on here a ton.  This is my hobby these days and I have had a little free time on my hand lately.  I do find myself defending him, but really, when someone talks about getting rid of Scioscia in a season where ANYONE in the world can see it is a total lack of talent causing it, well why not defend him.

The fact that 3 people actually believe that a manager can effect 10 games is mind numbing.

Maybe 2 since Pritchett can't figure out how to vote in a poll. :)

Exactly, these are the same people that at work blame thier bosses for their own shitty performance.  Either that or they really don't have any idea about the game of baseball.  These are people that can't tell the difference between a guy trying to bunt for a hit and a sacrifice bunt attempt.  Or the type of person that doesn't believe Trout has the green light to steal, so when he doesn't it is Albert's fault or Scioscia's fault.

I think just about anyone could get more consistent results out of these Angels right now.  The 1-11 record against Houston falls on Scioscia's shoulders IMHO.  The Angels alone are responsible for the Astros being above .500 this year.

That's one of the things I hate most about Scioscia, the "one game at a time" and other assorted BS under-emphasizes the importance of dominating your division rivals.  Any chance of competing is all but lost when the Angels are sub .500 against the AL West.
