Cron and Meyer Rehabbing

Recommended Posts

I watched Meyer a couple times with the Nats and I'll say this about him. I don't care about his current age or injury troubles, if he isn't a future staff ace, then no one in our minor league system is.

5 years from now, Eppler will be known as the GM that fixed this team. His draft from this year, and acquiring Meyer and Castillo will go down as the turning point.

Nobody liked the philosophy behind the trade, it's that simple.

I wouldn't be able to say I told you so to anyone on the trade. But I also wasn't entirely opposed. I love that we landed Meyer, but also thought it was too much of a risk to be considered a good trade.

I think looking back on it now, I like it. Saved a little money, got ourselves a very high upside prospect and still managed to land a warm body to eat innings until we're competitive again.

I wasn't completely opposed to the trade. I wrote this soon after the trade in the Santiago thread about the trade.

My bad, I read reports that he was 20 years old.  Still though, why did the Angels have to include another Prospect?  Eppler essentially traded Hector Santiago for Ricky Nolasco.

Eppler traded Hector for Alex Meyer, they made him take Nolasco as part of the deal or they would not do the trade. Meyer was a top prospect as little as 2 years ago. He has had shoulder issues and he is a little wild but his upside is a top of the rotation type starter. Eppler called it a gamble with a high reward for a 1 1/2 of Santiago.

Eppler traded Santiago for the best prospect he could find that fit into our needs ... philosophy?

He traded him for the highest upside prospect who also comes with the most risk, and he's 26.  I would say most people on here would rather have traded him for prospects with maybe not the incredibly high ceiling but weren't 26 years old and injured.  also most weren't happy we took on salary for next year in Nolasco.

It wasn't just about getting the highest upside player, but the one that could help the soonest.

That definitely seems to be the thinking. That sort of thinking is insane, but it would appear to be why they did it.

Why? We need starting pitching right now, regardless of our playoff aspirations. Meyer is controllable for six seasons.

They could have tendered Santiago at the end of next season and received a first round pick for him. I guess we'll find out someday if a year and two months of watching Nolasco pitch batting practice plus Meyer was worth a year and two months of a pretty decent left-handed starter and a first round pick in 2018.

But in that strategy, we run the specific risk of Santiago not pitching well enough to qualify for a pick. Compared to the risk of Meyer potentially only being a reliever instead of a starter, I'd say the risk was manageable.

That's because nobody took the time to understand the trade.

Meyer threw an inning in the rookie league while Santiago (two years older) is pitching in the big leagues. What's there to understand?

You really think Santiago will pitch well enough to receive a QO next year. Also if he does receive an QO, he would turn it down. Not Likely IMO
