some nice offensive performances today

22yo undrafted kid out of North Dakota State by the name of Luke Lind struck out 5 in 2.1ip.  Giving him 21k in 12.2ip for the season and only 3 er (all came in one outing).  If anyone has any info on him, I'd be curious.  He's 6'6" 225.  Only thing I could find was that Fangraphs puts together something called KATOH which is a projection system and they ranked the top 250 draft eligible college players.  Luke Lind ranked 76th.

As an aside, Griffin Canning ranked 2nd on the list (Brendan McKay was 1st - 4th pick overall).  Devon Perez 14th (21-625 DNS), Tyler Stevens 44th (18-535),  Jonah Todd was 50th (6-175).  Mitchel Traver 179th (20-595), Brady Feigl 215th (35-1045 DNS),

That makes 7 of our D1 college draftees on the list.

Jonathan Luman, the halos director of quantitative analysis has written for fangraphs and hardball times in the past.  Makes me think he created a proprietary ranking system for the draft.

Something different is definitely going on -- they are seemingly more saber aware than Eppler let on when first came on board and downplayed that part of his background.  Or maybe it's just a case of his having been very self aware that led to his infusion of money into the numbers end of the Angels front office.  Regardless -- I'm really excited about how this team seems to be fusing it's saber and scouting analysis.   I know we are years away from seeing this all really pay off - but it's nice to see things have changed.

Jones since the month of May (excluding today)

AB 324 Avg .302 HR 7 2B 22 3B 4 OBP .371 SLG .460 SB 15 CS 7 K 54 BB 32

Not bad for a guy that is still 19 years old. He has been killing it so far since his promotion.

The first month of the season was bad but he has rebounded nicely.

AB 72 Avg .167 HR 3 2B 0 3B 0 OBP .211 SLG .292 SB 4 CS 2 K 19 BB 4

Another thing with Jones, for the most part when he was in Burlington, the offense was just him. That team is pretty devoid of anything exciting.

Inland Empire has a pretty nice lineup in an offense-friendly league, so we're seeing what Jones can do as a true table-setter with lineup 'protection' (if you believe in that concept).

I don't think Eppler felt the need to tell reporters exactly what he's going to do. There plenty of room in player eval for scouting and saber, and this regime has done a bang up job so far of getting multiple scouts perspectives and lining up the numbers to see where value can be acquired. It really makes a lot of sense.

I think Dipoto was much more about portraying the image that he was calculating and helping the organization move into this millennium, in some ways he did, and many ways he was figuring it out along the way.

I think the difference between the two is that one had a plan and is executing it, whereas the other was going to figure it out along the way.

Time to bring Guerra back up, and send the struggling Middleton back down?

Only prob is Guerra isn't on the 40-man right now, and Skaggs and Heaney are close to returning and needing spots cleared on the 40-man as is.

I think we will see them roll with the team as is (with exception of SP returning) for a few weeks to see what they have. They can clear some vets via August trades at end of the month to free up some 40-man spots.

Deolis is out of options too so he will have to be brought up before Opening Day next year or be exposed to waivers. In fact I think if the Angels don't add him to the 40-man he can be picked up again by another team in the Rule V draft too (not 100% sure about that one).

Since they've exposed Deolis a few times to waivers now I don't think they're particularly concerned with losing him if he has to pass through again in the future, but he's been exceptional in AAA and deserves at least a chance come September (I assume some relief depth gets shaken up by then) and he actually wasn't too bad when with the Angels earlier in the year, if you take away a bad appearance or two.

A lot of times, teams will make unofficial "assurances" to convince a player to stay with the organization.

When we first drafted Guerra in the Rule 5, and he didn't make it, the team told him that if he'd sign a minor league pact, they'd have him up before the all-star break.

They may have made such a deal again with Guerra because he keeps coming back. May have had the same deal with Flores.

A few random thoughts:

*Brandon Marsh needs to be promoted. I know he's only played 11 games in Orem, but he's clearly on a different level and should be in A ball. Let him play a solid chunk of time there this year, and give him a chance to start 2018 in A+.

*Ditto Jordon Adell. The AZL is too easy for him - send him to Orem so he can get a full season in next year, starting in A ball, rather than staying in short season for another year.

*Jahmai Jones all of a sudden has a chance of starting 2018 in AA, or at least he almost certainly will reach AA by midseason. I think we have to start thinking of his major league ETA as being sometime in 2019.
