Again, splitters aren't effective in a dry, desert environment or in elevation. They don't drop. He's needed to rely solely on his curve and fastball, both of which are merely average pitches. Once he gets to sea level, then we can begin to assess whether he needs to be in AAA again. But for now, just take the wait and see approach.

Hard to believe this guy was 16-4 two seasons ago. What went wrong besides fastball location?

 

It was hard to believe then, too, considering his minor league numbers.  His career minor league ERA is 4.48.

Shoemaker has had a month to put it together. I agree with Mark Langston that he needs to be able to go longer in a game so the other starters have a bullpen and he can't. Can someone at Salt Lake be tried or would they consider trying Tim Lincecum?

Nate Smith would seem like the best option. He can keep the ball down and change speeds. That should be enough to keep the ball in the field of play.

Kyle McGowin is a gamble. He has the fastball-slider to become a pretty decent #3-4 starter, and he's looked sharp since the all-star break last year. He has swing and miss stuff, but if he gets hit, there's a chance it goes far, because he can miss up at times.

Kyle Kendrick, not worth it in my mind. Same as Shoe minus the upside.

Alvarez could be stretched out. He could be a 5th starter.

Rasmus could be too. But the likelihood of him getting injured is high.

This is a real problem though. We need someone that can get us to June or July. Weav's luck will run out, and Wilson, Skaggs and Heaney should be back by then.
