Las Vegas Raiders?

If you had told me ten years ago that this day would come, I would have told you that you were insane. The city that was not allowed to advertise during Super Bowls, host Super Bowl parties or mention the name of the game in advertising now has their own team. There is already early talk about hosting a Super Bowl.

Welcome, Las Vegas Raiders.

Actually, the reason for this is not that they are not allowed to mention the game.  It's the the NFL own the trademark to SuperBowl along with the teams names.  So if a casino or really anyone wants to use the names, they have to pony up $$$$$ for use of the copyrighted material.  Vegas gave the NFL the middle finger and just calls it the big game and uses the city name, and never the team name.

I'm not so sure. LV is a bottom 5 NFL market for size, per capita income, and corporate headquarters. Additionally much of the population is "newer" arrivals who already have loyalty to another team.

The Raiders are counting on up to 30% of their tickets being sold to out of town travelers, but travelers haven't shown a propensity to buy tickets to NFL games even at other "tourist" cities. Will travelers stick around until late on Sunday to go to games? Will they want to take 1 of their 2-3 days in Vegas and use it to watch a football game?

I'm sure they will do well at first when it is a novelty, but will tourists continue to guy tickets to games once the fun has worn off in 10 years?

If it wasn't the Raiders I'd say yes especially if it was a night game so I could watch the day games at a sports book before.  My concern is that the fans who do follow them there will be the same as some of their current fans who had me not wearing Bronco gear when I went two years in a row when they played in Oakland.  I'd rather enjoy the game instead of having insults, trash and possibly worse thrown my way.

As to the second question it all depends on how they do.  Most new teams experience some success early on as far as attendance goes but once the novelty wears off it's all about winning and the product they put on the field.

Few things in life beat hanging out at the Sports Book watching march madness, with a 4 game parlay on the line.

Free drinks brought to you. Food brought to you. Lots of excitement, etc.

But could be fun to be AT a football game and do the bets there I supposed. But if I'm in Vegas, doubtful I want to spend half a day at football stadium.

More than likely, you won't be able to make bets at the stadium.  But yeah, being in the sports book, with a parlay going in the last leg.

Well, visitors in Vegas will spend a few hours watching Donnie and Marie, or Britney, or a Cirque Show, or any number of shows.  And they pay quite a bit to watch those shows also.  Is there really a difference of watching those to spending a few hours watching a football game?

Honestly, I've never been to any of those shows in Vegas so I am not the expert on that. But here are some of my imagined differences:

1. Length of show. NFL games run from between 3:15 - 3:30 minutes long. Maybe Cirque shows run that long, but I don't think Britney performs for 2 hours. That extra hour to an hour and a half is the length of a movie.

2. Time: An NFL game takes up literally the whole afternoon. In order to get to your seats by 1:00-1:15 you'd probably have to arrive at the stadium by about 12:45. Game ends around 4:30-4:45 and you're back at your hotel by 5:15. This keeps people from watching the end of the early games, any other late game, and probably the start of the Sunday night game in a sports book. Donnie and Marie are probably only up against a Pac - 12 night game on Saturday or an ACC game on Friday night.

2B. Seeing a Raiders game pretty much means you are extending your stay through Sunday night. You can see the other shows on Friday or Saturday.

3. Those Vegas shows are mostly only available in Vegas. Maybe they tour occasionally but it's only for a day at each place and not all the time. The NFL is available in 27 other cities 10 days every year and 2 more cities 20 days a year. I don't have to go to Vegas to get that. If I'm in Vegas I want to do something I can't do where I come from.

4. Football is better on TV than live. Ticket sales are declining across the NFL in general for years. Music/theater is better in person. Tours make more money than ever. Pretty much the only reason artists release albums any more is to support a tour.

4B. Entertainment time. In an NFL game you get 7 seconds of play and then 30 seconds of dead ball. Plus 12 time outs. Plus half time. Plus injury time outs. Plus TV time outs. Plus quarter time outs. Maybe Britney Spears has a brief intermission and Cirque has half an hour, but that's nothing in comparison.

5. Very sexist point - It's a lot easier to bring the wife/girlfriend to a show than a Raiders game. Some women love football. Many hate Donnie and Marie, but stereo-typically I think women are more excited about a show than a football game.

I went into the Oakland forum on City Data to see what the local discussion about the move was. The thread has degenerated into an argument between Giants fans and A's fans about who is better and more loyal.

LESS FILLING!!

TASTES GREAT!!

as if driving on the strip isn't already fun and easy enough!

One of the proposed locations for the stadium was on the Strip itself. I can't imagine what Sunday game day traffic would have been like.

With the lease agreement done, it appears that ground will be broken in either December or January. I believe that the Raiders will wind up playing at least one season at Sam Boyd Stadium. I can't see them staying in Oakland for two years after this announcement.

yeah, neither can i. why would anyone want to attend their games in oakland?

of course, that's been a fair question to ask for a few decades now.

I was thinking about them maybe playing at Cashman Field. The neighborhood around it is a lot like Oakland. Homeless camps and shelters up and down the road. Should add a lot to the game day atmosphere and maybe ease the transition.

They'd have to make it smell like urine and parole violators to really get fans in the proper game day atmosphere.
