Nevada Senate approves Raiders' $1.9 billion Las Vegas stadium deal

The next step for the proposed stadium to become a reality is for the State General Assembly, which reconvenes Thursday, to pass the measure. The $1.9 billion stadium project hinges on the approval of public funding. A two-thirds vote is needed in the General Assembly to push the project forward. [/i]

Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis praises ‘historic day’ in Nevada

CARSON CITY — Waiting all week was no inconvenience for Raiders owner Mark Davis, who worked for more than six years to get a new stadium in Oakland.

His team’s new home instead will be built in Las Vegas, and the deal he got seemingly happened overnight. After Nevada lawmakers staged a marathon session that adjourned at 1 a.m. Friday, Davis finally received the news he wanted to hear about 1 p.m., when the Legislature passed a financing plan for a 65,000-seat domed football stadium near the Strip, capping a weeklong special session.

The proposal for the $1.9 billion stadium, which includes $750 million in public funds via a Clark County hotel room tax increase, passed the Assembly in a 28-13 vote that was finalized at 11:50 a.m. A two-thirds supermajority vote was required for the bill to advance, and the final vote was right on the number. The amended bill was returned to the Senate, which quickly passed the measure, sending it to Gov. Brian Sandoval.

Ok this was in the LA Times today.  Something struck me as very odd.

What else is new? NFL, billionaires prepare two new stadium ripoffs

No, not that they are looking for a handout.  Adelsson wants a handout from Vegas.  Adelsson owns Sands and Venetian and says the stadium is a must have.  MGM says it would be nice to have.

The thing that struck me as odd.  Is that the location of the stadium would be next to the airport, according to this article, where the golf course is.

I know enough about Vegas geography to know that this would be a direct and huge benefit to MGM.  Since the stadium would be on the side of the strip where MGM pretty much controls everything.

If Adelsson is going to be a major partner in this thing, shouldn't he be fighting for a location that would benefit him, and not be a major benefit to a competitor?

It's most likely going to be built across the freeway from Mandalay Bay but... ya... same area.

The location mentioned most often is at I-15 and Russell Road, west of the Interstate. Near the south end of the Strip, for those unfamiliar. From a recent article about the project:

The location of the proposed stadium remains undecided. A 62-acre area northwest of Russell Road and Interstate 15 is the developers’ preferred site, but the 140-acre Bali Hai Golf Club, between I-15 and Las Vegas Boulevard, just south of Russell, is an option. The committee did not recommend either site, leaving that decision to the developers and a stadium authority board.

The location closest to McCarran Airport was on the UNLV campus, roughly in the area of the Thomas & Mack Center. There were concerns about the height of the stadium, because that area is in the direct flight path of one of the major runways at the airport. That location was pretty much abandoned as a result.

With how much hotel occupancy and # of hotels Vegas has.  It's not that bad of a deal.

I still question the location.  Adelson/Venetian is center strip.  Convention is also center/to the Downtown side.

This stadium which is supposed to help the convention is way on the opposite side at MGM territory.  It would make more sense to put it by Circus Circus, or even opposite where Venetian is.

yeah, the worst stadium deal is the new texas rangers one. the more they dig into they keep finding all sorts of shady shit.

Miami one is pretty bad also.  Don't remember the specifics, but it was something like over a billion the population would pay by the end of the deal.

So where would they play in the meantime?   UNLV's off campus stadium (5 miles east) only seats some 32,000.

it was announced they're committed to playing in oakland the next two years.

The problem with putting it on the Strip is that Las Vegas Boulevard is already effectively a parking lot on weekends, without adding 65,000 football fans on a Sunday. There is no way to widen the Strip given the proximity of the hotels.

I don't think professional sports would work in Las Vegas.  The fan base would be more tourists than residents.  I could see a gambler attending a Super Bowl or the show of a top name entertainer, but a regular season game, I really don't think so.

My hope is that the Raiders stay in Oakland and the Chargers in San Diego, where the fans are interested in football. I think the NFL will get more involved and preserve these venues.

I believe that it will, and that the NFL has a better chance than any other league to make it work. More than two million people live here, but thus far everything has been centered around catering to tourists. Locals don't have much that we can consider our own. The NFL, with eight home games and two pre-season games, would not require a huge time commitment on the part of season ticket holders. A Super Bowl in this town would be epic,

But isn't the current proposed capacity 65k, which falls short of the minimum 70k needed for a Super Bowl?

It appears that Oakland's last gasp effort to keep the team was exactly that.

Raiders poised to move to Las Vegas, with or without Sheldon Adelson’s involvement

Adelson is a pretty big shot in Vegas isn't he?  Only the Davis' could screw up this deal.

It would be like firing the no good casino manager because he is incompetent, and then not finding him a job as a janitor.  Because he was the nephew of a big shot with connections to the gaming board.

The filing would include a statement explaining the Raiders’ decision, then potentially words from Goodell. There would be committee meetings to analyze the move from all sides, then a vote of all the owners. Between the analysis, vetting, and discussion, it’s likely it would take about 4-6 weeks.

That would set up a vote of the owners to send the Raiders to Vegas during the late-March league meetings in Arizona — with 24 votes needing to pass. The other option would be to call a special league meeting, which doesn’t appear likely.

Based on recent decisions made in the NFL by the league’s owners, there’s no reason to suspect the vote won’t pass.

What is going to be really awkward is that the plan calls for the Raiders to remain in Oakland for the 2017 and 2018 seasons, because there is no suitable stadium here for them to play in prior to then.
