The FBI says you may need to pay up if hackers infect your computer with ransomware

 

I guess the job of the FBI is really just to harrass US Citizens.  Who cares about crime done to US Citizens.

I'd be interested to hear your suggestions on how the fbi can combat this.

Radio lab had a podcast on this the other day, was fascinating. These ransom groups even have customer support.

Pretty eye opening, and once your hit there's not much you can do but pay up

If you want your data. Pays to have really good backups.

A buddy of mine who used to work for a local well known company had to deal with this.  As red said even if the perpetrators are caught or whatever server/website/etc. that you get the ransomware from is shut down about the only way to deal with it is to pay up.  That was what happened in his case and because they didn't have everything backed up he had to sit there for hours basically clicking okay to continue unlocking thousands of files.
