Orange County Register: Mariners pick Angels assistant GM Scott Servais for manager job

Recommended Posts

Servais has no managerial background across any level.

Will it turn out to be a good move?

Or like when Lefty Phillips the scout became Lefty Phillips the Halos manager in 1969, and after one solid 1970 season with September collapse lost the team in 1971?

Funny, the people who want Darin Erstad as manager of the Angels don't seem to be asking those questions.

Servais also got an interview to replace Dipoto as the Angels GM, but it was considered mostly a formality. Not only did Servais lack the front office experience of Billy Eppler, who was eventually hired, but he had also clashed with Mike Scioscia over the past four years.

Mike DiGiovanna's article today in the LA Times provides more details behind the Scioscia - Servias clash: http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/la-sp-sn-former-angels-exec-scott-servais-mariners-manager-20151023-story.html

"Scioscia and Servais clashed over some of the coaching and instruction techniques used to develop minor leaguers, and Scioscia did not allow Servais to dress out in full uniform and take part in on-field drills during spring training, something Servais did — and enjoyed — during his tenure with Texas."

My guess is that Scioscia and Servais clashed over Scioscia not being involved more in the minor leagues. There was a article that I am too lazy to go back and find but Mike said something along the lines of, "I have been doing this long enough to know that you need to be more involved that with just the 25 guys in the clubhouse."

I liked Servais. I met him at John Wayne Airport shortly after Dipoto quit.

Conversation went something like this.

Me: wtf happened to jerry bro

Servais: I know man... he was a good friend of mine.. I wish I could tell you more, but I can't

Me: dang... Alright... well you can leave your shoes on cause you're Pre Check..have a good one..

I like to think we became good friends that day.

Also got to meet Jerry Dipoto at john wayne in May.

He was really friendly and not shy to discuss what he was up to.

Now they're both gone... :(

Wow, just make friends rather easily. You must know a lot of people in fast food.
