Orange County Register: Fryer: Angels' Mike Scioscia should be praised for a job well done in 2015

Recommended Posts

I shouldn't have to point this out, but that article takes a contrarian point of view for the sole purpose of attracting clicks. There's no merit to anything the author is saying because he spent all his time making that "clever" title.

Maybe OCR should change their name to Buzzfeed?

Feelings about Scioscia aside, is this what passes for a newspaper assignment these days? A bulleted list?

If you make it to the end this is what you're treated to:

• For the 50th anniversary, bring back the “CA” caps with the halos for the home opener and maybe for select dates like Sundays. But make the halos gold instead of the silver they used to be.

• The Dodgers are tough at home. They went 55-26 at Dodger Stadium for a winning percentage of .679, their highest at Chavez Ravine and their best home winning percentage since the Brooklyn Dodgers were 56-22 (.718) at Ebbets Field in 1946.

• Clayton Kershaw is tough at home. In 127 regular-season career starts at Dodger Stadium, Kershaw is 63-28 with a 2.07 ERA and opposing teams are batting .200 against him there. He gets the start in Friday’s NLDS opener against the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium.

• Ticketmaster still had plenty of seats available Tuesday afternoon for the Ducks’ home opener Monday against Vancouver.

• NFL quarterbacks sacked the most times so far this season: Alex Smith, Kansas City, 18; Russell Wilson, Seattle, 16.

• The Miami Dolphins had one coach from 1970-95, Don Shula. They have had nine coaches since then.

• UCLA linebacker Myles Jack should have stayed in school. His current résumé is too light on achievements if he wants to be taken seriously by NFL teams.

• Ohio State’s football team is undefeated, although the Buckeyes’ team quarterback rating is a dismal 40.7.

• Golden West College’s 24-17 win over Fullerton on Saturday pushed the Rustlers up from No. 4 to No. 3 in the community college state football rankings. The Rustlers are 5-0. Also in the state top 25 are Saddleback (3-2) at No. 17 and Fullerton (2-3) at No. 24.

• Golden West’s Quest Truxton was named Southern California Football Association all-purpose player of the week. He had 132 yards receiving, 54 yards rushing and 19 return yards in the Rustlers’ win over Fullerton.

• For the first time since July of 2009, the NFL in September went a full month without a player getting arrested. Finally, something that we can … hold on … just a minute …

• Nope. Tennessee Titans receiver Dorial Green-Beckham was arrested on the final day of September for not paying a speeding ticket. Dang. So close.

Ridiculous - Stubborn ass mule - Murphy FARRRRR out performed all of the three headed Stoneman monster...yet because he's a lefty...bs...kept shoving in Shane.

And continued to force feed Ianada instead of seeing that Perez is the future. Perez really came around defensively and clutch hits once he got solid ABs in consecutive games. Shocking we didn't see Ianada in game 162.

He's the 3rd or 4th best skipper in the AL West...

As much as we like to rip on Scioscia, the team had a -14 run differential and somehow made it to Game 162 before being eliminated. The team won 85 games while their expected win total was 79.

Just pointing out stats. I'm not taking one side or the other here.

I don't disagree with you, but the outrage in this thread is directed at the egregiously written "article".

This article is going to stir the pot a bit lol the seventh inning was not handled well in game 162. When the first two runners got on he should have gone straight to smith, I get he was trying to save him for later in the game but you can't play like that in that situation. He doesn't manage with any urgency and it shows. All of our bitching gets us nowhere, he'll be here for 3 more years. 1 playoff appearance (a 3 game sweep) in 6 years. HOW do you keep your job?

Expected win total 79, he got 85.  Marginal overall talent in a playoff hunt.  Job well done.  Turns the page better than anyone.

His job is to get the Angels to the playoffs.   One (very short) playoff in last 6 tries, lower percentage than Iannetta's batting average.  Angels will likely dump Iannetta, but Scioscia lives on because of a "job well done"?  Mediocrity reigns supreme in this organization.

Murphy hit .265 with a .281 OBP for the Angels. That is not really anything to make a case that he was a huge contributor refused playing time.

The Angels making it to Game 162 was because of the Astros and Rangers being weak to the very end, not the other way around.  None of the three managers deserve much praise for the way their teams finished the season. 88 wins to win the division is really pathetic.

You're right about the run differential though.  While not a good excuse for 2015, we've never really had a truly awful season under Scioscia.  He just isn't good at motivating teams until it's too late.

A Championship was an unattainable goal with this group.

Absolutely. If you want to fire Scioscia it should be for years like 2012. Hell even last year I'm not sure what Scioscia could have done when no one hit the first two games. This year his team outperformed their talent.

If the players like him thats the most important thing. This is the big leagues it's all about managing personalities, keeping everyones goals team oriented.

An american league baseball manager is not like a football coach. Very tough to manipulate wins. The talent of a roster determines how good a MLB team really is.

Of course the players like him. Very rarely is anyone held accountable for making the stupid decisions that Scioscia run teams make year in and year out. With a team that was so devoid of talent, like all of the nut swingers state, would it not make sense to be fundamentally sound? This team is terrible fundamentally year after year after year (missed sac bunt attempts, running into outs, fielding blunders at terrible times, situational hitting, etc.). Maybe Scioscia should coach the fundamentals to make up for our lack of talent? These guys make Little League mistakes over and over and over again and it appears that no one gives a shit because it keeps happening. It's just the "Angel Way". Be aggressive and stupid.

I don't buy the talent argument, however. I buy the fact that a complacent manager gets complacent results from his players. The team won 98 games last year and was in first place at the AS break. Guess what happened? They got complacent because apparently the manager does not preach focus and intensity on a DAY-TO-DAY basis and, right there, is where Scioscia's "turn the page" mentality/it's okay little guy/get him next time mentality kills this team.

He should have got it last year.  I am not sure he deserves it this year.   In both years the teams over achieved, however, I think the 2014 team winning 98 games is a greater over achievement than this year teams "being in the playoff hunt".

Houston manager deserves a lot of MOY credit.  I don't think anyone expected Houston to be this good this year.
