Trade Heaney while his stock is high

Package him with another arm in the minors like Ellis.

Acquire 2-3 high level everyday TOP prospects.

Sign David Price or Zimmerman.. or even someone like Kazmir...

Rotation improves, farmsystem depth improves... still remain competitive.

Hate on it all you want, but he's the only guy capable of bringing in a decent hall that wouldn't severely impact the major league roster.

it depends on the deal, I don't think its a terrible idea depending on the return.  Poozy, I agree with you that Heaney is likely not a front end starter.  I just don't see him striking out enough people to be that kind of pitcher.  He seems to project as a good to very good mid rotation starter, which by the way is very valuable.  The reality is he's a young MLB ready cost controlled SP.  That in itself should command a significant return.  The Angels have areas with less depth then pitcher, so again for the right deal I could see it being viable option.  I just doubt that deal ever materializes.

Heaney is a left hander who throws in the mid 90's and has 5 years of club control. He has the makings of a top of the rotation starter.

You do not trade that.

91 MPH with no movement is considered "mid 90s" now?

And how the hell do you think teams acquire talent? takes talent to acquire talent......

So, is the idea to trade a young, cost-controlled starter and one of the team's top pitching prospects for....more prospects? I don't really get it. If you trade Heaney and Ellis you'd better be getting a damn good bat in return.

The reasoning is to restock the farm with upper level everyday prospects while remaining competitive.

Heaney and Ellis wont get you a damn good bat unless he came with a lot of salary owed.

To me, Heaney already looks like a solid #3, and I figure that's what he'll likely be for the next 10 years.  His value isn't up or down.  He isn't a prospect anymore.  He's a major leaguer, and a pretty solid one at that.  I just don't see the purpose in packaging young, inexpensive major leaguers with upside for young inexpensive prospects for upside.  It just doesn't make a ton of sense, and neither does trading away our second best starting pitcher.

I'm fine with trading some of our pitching.  Even after Wilson and Weaver are gone, the Angels could still afford to trade Santiago, Shoemaker and Smith, and still roll out a rotation of Richards, Newcomb, Heaney, Skaggs and Tropeano/Ellis.

In my understanding of how to construct a major league organization, you're supposed to build around young talent, not trade it away the moment they have some success.  What would've happened had we traded Trout away after his rookie year, just because we thought he wouldn't always be a 10-win player?
