Orange County Register: Smith: Angels' Chris Iannetta gracefully handles toughest ending of his 10 big league seasons

Recommended Posts

The guy seems to have handled his demotion with class and was really supportive of the guy that supplanted him.  When he was made aware of how bad his pitch framing was he spent an offseason making himself better -- he went from one of the worst, to one of the best....  He should be getting some praise for what he did right and not just derided for his poor offensive season.  Not sure what else anyone could really ask of him.  He just had a bad season.

As an Angel he posted an OPS+ of 105 -- amassed 6.1 fWAR while earning 19 mil over four years -- one of the better values on the team over that span..   I wish every Angels acquisition worked out that well.

I'm not opposed at all to bringing him back since he's super cheap and a very strong bounce back candidate, given how good a hitter he has been up until this year. Perez deserves the bulk of the playing time but Iannetta looks like a solid cheap option for him to split time with.

Given Scioscia's penchant for veterans I'd say there's no way we should bring Iannetta back. Stop giving Scioscia his toys. The HR potential is nice but I like having a starting catcher who can throw runners out. Our staff needs that.

Mike Scioscia likes catchers that are plus defenders..   Perez showed he has a glove and an arm... just about every out of town telecast the last month or so the season spent time during their telecast talking about how much MS was gushing about Perez and how he compared him to Bengie, it was actually pretty funny how they all went on to say that its rare to see MS compliment players, much less catchers..

It seems pretty likely that Perez has won MS over, particularly given who rode the pine all of September.

I get that. I just don't want to give Sosh the opportunity to backslide.

Perez also has one thing Bengie didn't have: some speed. Perez made several plays close where Bengie would have been thrown out by 10 feet. >>>>

LOL...I remember someone on one of the old boards describing Bengies running style "like a turtle with a piano on it's back"

I've always remembered that line.

I think of Bengie when I see Pujols trying to get that extra base..

Benjie was way more clutch than Pujols has been as an Angel, though.

Benjie had some absolutely huge hits in his time.

This post frightens the hell out of me.

I've always been a big Iannetta fan. What's funny about his season is that his offense cratered but his pitch framing took a huge step forward.

My unpopular take is that we should try bringing him back on a 1/3 type deal. It'd be nice to still have a veteran catcher here and we've seen that Iannetta provides value with his OBP and now his pitch framing. I'm not a big fan of letting Bandy/Perez take all the starts in 2016.

I never actually noticed that until recently. He really is fast, but he also hustles unlike a lot of players.

The article states that after April, his average was .252, which is pretty much what he's provided throughout his career. So his offense cratered for one month, and that month is magnified because it was the FIRST month and he spent the rest of the year raising his average from that .093 April.
