It was probably debatable whether he was going to pitch in the playoffs anyway...or at least the one game they're likely to have.

Drinking was a HUGE part of the landscape in MLB's past.  (as in society as a whole) Players, coaches, managers, sportswriters...man, the stories are epic. These guys spent whole summers traveling, staying in hotels, hanging out with a bunch of guys in bars at night, every night...and writers were loyal and closed mouthed about what went on. It was wild on an extreme level.

 

Even worse was the life the guys led in the minors...especially the ex-big leaguers who had gotten a taste of the bigs and couldn't stick, but had done nothing else and had nothing but baseball in their skill resume.

when it's 120 degrees and you are drinking from sunup, i could see 107 being doable by lunchtime.
