Has Scioscia Changed His Managerial Style Over Time?

For all that say he doesn't bother with metrics he employed a lot of defensive shifts over the last three seasons. More each year and I really don't believe that many were effective but you can clearly remember them not working and it costing pitchers either base runners and or runs. Weaver was especially disappointed in the results of the shift not working.

I don't blame him, he is a control pitcher and may want to force a player to swing at pitches they can't muscle and ground out weakly to the opposite side of the diamond. Taking that away reduces his areas he can pitch to and opens the hitting zone of the pull hitter.

I think he used to be smarter and more aggressive. Apologists would tell you that the Angels don't run as much anymore simply because we don't have guys that can run. Is pull the BS card on that.

Trout can run, he just never does. Part if this is Scioscia, part of it is preserving Mike's body for the long run. Aybar and Giavotella can still run, but nothing from them. The Angels could have Dee Gordon right now and with Scioscia controlling things, he might get 20 SB.

He's still aggressive with the hit and run and taking the extra base though. This used to be part of the charm but once DiSarcina got here, it turned into I'll-advised and unexessary.

Part of the idea behind using shifts is that the pitches have to be in certain locations for the shifts to actually be effective.
