Now that the season is over, Angels manager Mike Scioscia can exercise an opt-out in his ten-year contract, but he isn’t saying whether he’ll do so, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register writes. “I’m going to see,” Scioscia said. “I’m not going to comment on anything.”

Of course, the Angels’ season ended today, so that Scioscia would receive a question about this matter today isn’t surprising, and it’s not necessarily meaningful that he’s not yet willing to commit to an answer. MLB.com’s Alden Gonzalez reported last week that Scioscia was expected to remain in his position, and Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times tweets tonight that Scioscia will not exercise his opt-out.

Still, Scioscia’s situation is worth noting, given the news this evening that the Angels plan to hire Billy Eppler as their GM. The Angels’ previous GM, Jerry Dipoto, departed in July after clashing with Scioscia. As Fletcher notes, Eppler likely wouldn’t have the authority to fire Scioscia, but perhaps it’s possible Scioscia might not want to work with a new GM.

Scioscia has three years left on the ten-year, $50MM contract to which he agreed prior to the 2009 season. He will be paid $6MM in each of the next three seasons. Scioscia has managed the Angels for 16 seasons, posting a 1416-1176 overall record and winning the World Series in 2002.

We shall see what direction Eppler wants to go.  It's really going to be up to him.  But it's probably too early in the process.  A lot can happen, like say the Dogs get rolled out of the playoffs.  Or Dipoto comes calling from Seattle.  /giggle.  Or Eppler does a retool of the personnel and coaching staff.

The GM doesn't have the authority to fire the Manager.

Stop it, Arte!  Just stop it!

Honestly though. I can't think of a situation past or present where a MLB baseball manager had so much power in the organization that his boss couldn't fire him. Maybe Joe Torre had that after 4 World championships. Maybe Bochy has it after 3.

I doubt Sosh leaves Bumgarner in for 5 innings.

I think it's strange that Eppler's announcement was made before the Angels even boarded the plane to come home and that a press conference will be ready to go 15 hours after the Angels returned to Orange County.  Today could have easily been a tie-breaker game if the Angels won yesterday.  Somebody is frantically throwing this together at the last minute.  The question is why?

Are they hoping Scioscia will get a better (quicker) glimpse of Eppler and decide to opt out?

They are not frantically throwing anything together, Eppler was their choice a long time ago but they had to first find out of they would qualify to play New York for the wildcard play in. It would have been inappropriate to take a playoff competitors upper level management right before the series. So the moment the elimination was in the books Eppler was free to go where he and the Angels knew he was headed, to Anaheim for a press conference.

Other teams had already replaced their GMs but it was because they knew they would not be competing in any playoff scenario so there was no conflict of interest. The Angels are actually a few moths behind schedule because of Dipoto's departure when they were still in the race for the AL West and never dropped out of a wildcard spot.

Will Scioscia opt out? At this point I kinda hope teams make him attractive offers that force his hand rather than eventually being fired for next season not being able to make the mess that is the roster competitive. A new staff with a revised 25 man roster is really what is needed, not the old philosophy with a patchwork of players just to keep heads above water.

That would be tampering and very against the rules.

I have lots of thoughts on this that will be detailed at a later time... but I think he tries to turn it into an extension of some kind.  Arte obviously wants him otherwise he wouldn't have pushed out JD and all media pundits seem to believe Eppler is the choice because he will work well with Scioscia.
