Orange County Register: Moura: Making playoffs in 2015 no barometer of how Angels are set up for 2016 and beyond

Overall interesting article, but nothing that hasn't been often discussed here.

"It would've been even more unusual had owner Arte Moreno not meddled and signed Albert Pujols, C.J. Wilson and Josh Hamilton for close to a half-billion dollars. That truth had long been clear, but, at his introductory news conference in Seattle this week, Dipoto came out and said it for the first time.

Whoever the Angels hire to replace him, one of several capable candidates within their organization or someone of similar standing to where Dipoto was when he was hired, he will tackle that unsolved issue."

Unsolved issue is a good description.  I'm not sure there is any kind of answer to that one.  When you enter contracts that big, and the risk fails it stays with you for a long time.  At least Wilson gets dumped for sure after next season.  They kind of forgot about Weaver, he makes $20M I believe next year, but it's also his final year.  Pujols puts in the work and effort so I have trouble dumping things on him, his body just won't b able to make it to the finish line.  So he may go sooner than expected.  He's a responsible guy, and he gives back lots of intangibles - just not the kind of performance we hoped for.  Hamilton's contract is the killer, and he really did nothing to earn it.  He's just a really lucky dude, and he seems pretty ungrateful for what people have done for him.

This is probably the worst spot the franchise has been in in my life time. At least in the early 90's they had Edmonds, Salmon and Anderson in the system.

True, but....gotta disagree...those 90s years were awful. Yeah, good crop of young guys, but it took years for them to figure it all out. 2002 was so unexpected because off 2001 (for thos who dont remember). 99 was a shit show too, as well (off the top of my head) as 96/7. I think only 98 and 2000 (95 regardless of the ending) were winning seasons.

This season we'll (likely) miss rhe playoffs and everyone is gonna hate life. In the 90s finishing .500 was a winning year.

Maybe it was just my youth, but those teams didn't feel that bad because there was significant talent on them. They always seemed to be pitching and depth deficient of course, but it's not like this team doesn't have issues with depth as well. Late 90's with Salmon, Edmonds, Anderson, Erstad, Glaus, Vaughn, Finley, it's hard to believe they weren't better and the 2002 world series win I didn't find that surprising.

It's funny thinking about it too, because this team has won a lot more games than most of the 90's teams, despite a dearth of talent beyond Trout. The late 90's Seattle Mariners are similar IMO. Absolutely tons of talent, future Hall of Famers, MVP's and All Stars, yet they never won a world series, or even went to one. Not that many division titles either, but then they had that 116 win season... Maybe this just says more about baseball and perception than anything else.
