If we tie with Astros for second wild card, what happens?

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/38029316/playoff-tiebreaker-rules

Those are the rules for everything up to and including 4-way ties for divisions, wild card, or combinations thereof. Ties with more than two teams involve all tems involved being seeded A, B, C (and D) based on their head to head records. The only thing MLB has no plan for is a 5-way tie.

The most interesting results would be a three way tie between TEX, HOU, and LAA for the division and second wild card. Next most interesting would be if MIN also ends with the same record for a four-way tie:

Three-Club Tie for Division Championship & One Wild Card Spot:

After Clubs have been assigned their A, B and C designations, Club A would host Club B on Thursday, October 4th (tentatively). The winner of that game would then host Club C on Friday, October 5th (tentatively) to determine the Division Champion. The loser of the game would be declared the Wild Card Club.

Three-Club Tie for Division Championship & Tie with Club Outside Division For One Wild Card Spot:

After Clubs have been assigned their A, B, C and D designations (In this case, Club D would be the Club outside the Division), Club A would host Club B and Club C would host Club D on Thursday, October 4th (tentatively).

  1. If Club D wins, it would be declared the Wild Card Club and the winner of the game between Club A and Club B would be declared the Division Champion.
  2. If Club C wins, then the winner of the game between Club A and Club B would host Club C on Friday, October 5th (tentatively). The winner of the game would be declared the Division Champion and the loser would be declared the Wild Card Club.

In plain English, if there's a tie between the Astros and the Angels, there'd be a one game playoff to decide who the second Wild Card team is.  Since Houston owns the better head to head record, they'd host the game.

If there's a three way tie between the Angels, Astros and Rangers, the Angels would then host the Rangers (because the Angels have the best record against the ALW).  The winner would be the ALW division champion, the loser would then have a home game against the Astros.  The winner of that would be the second wild card.

If there's a tie between the Angels, Twins and Astros, the Angels (because they have the best intra-division record) would have the choice to either play a do-or-die away game or try to win two home games.  Most teams would choose the do-or-die away game.  Easier to win one on the road than two at home.
