RIP Yogi Berra

His hitting stats are unreal. That's the only word I can come up with.

When one thinks of hitters during that era, it's Williams, Mantle, DiMaggio...maybe it was because Yogi was so much of a personality that his prowess at the plate was somewhat unrecognized.

One of the best "bad-ball" hitters of all time. He once said, "If I can hit it, it's a good pitch."

From all accounts, Yogi seemed like a genuinely good guy. The true test of a man is not necessarily how he handles failure - although that's important - but how he handles success. Most don't do well. Yogi excelled.

In a different way, however, one thing that always puzzled me was how this stocky, 5'7, not really athletic looking dude not only played professional baseball and cracked the major leagues but became an upper echelon Hall of Famer. If it were today, who would look at him and even give him the chance? That's probably another of his endearing qualities. He gave the average guy hope.

Yankees almost traded Joe DiMaggio for Ted Williams. The player the Yankees refused to add into the deal was an unproven short, squat catcher from their farm by the name of Yogi Berra.

I heard a story about this. The thinking was that DiMaggio could take advantage of the Green Monster, while Williams could benefit from the short right field corner at Yankee Stadium. I did not know that it was also proposed for Berra to be included in the deal.

Someone who has to be taking Berra's death very hard is Joe Garagiola. He and Berra grew up in the same neighborhood in St. Louis and they were lifelong best friends. Both have been described as incredibly generous and giving. My prayers go out to him as well.

For those of you who didn't have an hour to watch the video I posted about Yogi...here are "8 mins to remember #8", a condensed version.
Plus, I'm thinking Yogi should stay on page 1 around here, longer than just 1 day.
