Billy Eppler front runner for GM job - Hal Morris a darkhorse candidate

I can't see Eppler as being a good candidate for the Seattle market. I mean it's so different from New York it would be like taking a job on Mars for him.

Not to mention I've been told Eppler is a lock to take a job down here in Scioscialand.

Was Mathis really a failed prospect? Overhyped, perhaps, but he has over 2,000 plate appearances to his name. If you are looking to draft a catcher at the end of the first round and you are told only that the player will eventually compile over 2,000 plate appearances, i think 30 out of 30 scouting directors would gladly make that draft selection.

Yeah.... he was, at least from the standpoint of what he projected to be.   His Low A season at age 19 in the Midwest League really was impressive, possibly more impressive than what D-Mac and Kotchman did in the same league, on the same team...   But you are right when you say he's anything but a failure.   Among position players catchers are the biggest longshots, and HS catchers even more so than college ones --  When it's all said and done he beat the odds in a major way.

The scouting department was really something in those days -- Naps and Mathis were taken in back to back drafts..   Naps, D-Mac, Kotchman, Mathis, Santana, Saunders, and Peralta were all on that 2002 Low A team.

I don't know anything about Eppler, but it is hard to argue with the Yankees' success. I have to assume someone that high up in such a successful organization is probably pretty good at their job.

Eppler is a smart baseball executive. He's nobody's stooge. He's probably seeking a VP/GM position with full authority or he may just take Cashman's position in the future.
