It does, though. Trust me; I've been an AP Style expert for about 13 years now.

A period or comma never goes outside of the quotation mark. A question mark can when the question is related to the entire phrase and not just the section in quotes.

Also, a period inside the quotation mark signifies the end of the sentence, even if there is a quotation mark after it.

Possibility and I don’t think the earths age is settled science. I tend to believe it’s younger than most think. The old earth theory really came about with evolution. Evolution doesn’t work without old earth theory. I just have a hard time trusting the end of world theories of men who don’t understand the beginning.
