MLB Managers and Coaches: Miggy better hitter than Trout

Recommended Posts

Managers/coaches and Angel fans seem at odds regarding Eric Aybar's bunting ...

Aybar is fine at executing the bunts. It's the timing of when to attempt the bunt that is questionable.

Or, its just familiarity breeding contempt.   When you see it over and over and over, the times it blows up stand out.   But when compared to other he's very very good.   His average on bunts is typically among the AL leaders - he's got multiple flat bat awards under his belt.

wOBA is probably as good as any stat to determine pure hitting ability. Unlike wRC+, it doesn't include baserunning. Here are their wOBAs over the last four years:

Trout (.413): .409, .423, .402, .420

Cabrera (.420): .417, .455, .384, .435

The outlier for Cabrera is 2014, when I believe he was nursing or recovering from an injury. But clearly Cabrera has the edge, although it isn't by a huge amount.

By the way, Harper's wOBA this year is .467, which is better than any season by Cabrera or Albert Pujols, for that matter.

The only part id disagree from that is i think mcab has more power...but maybe im wrong?

I think miggy is the better hitter all around, bo problem with that but trouts the better player. His total skills more than make up for the gap in hitting

In terms of things like batted ball velocity and home run distance Trout is among the very top alongside Stanton, Cruz, and Donaldson. Cabrera is the best overall hitter, but Trout hits for more power at this time.
