Randal Grichuk Is Cardinals' Best Slugging Prospect Since Albert Pujols

Be interesting to see if Grichuk can keep this up.

He is striking out in 31.5% of his at bats while only walking 5.5% of the time.

He's basically playing way over his head thanks to a .382 BABIP

Or his ISO is fueling his BABIP.  He is torching balls. Grichuk won't keep his batting average where it is but it's a bit too soon to write off his success as BABIP driven.  He has a sky high ISO and the second best generated exit velocity in MLB after Stanton.  When you are producing that sort of pop and tend to elevate everything you hit, good things can happen.

The dude has always looked like an outlier, the only real surprise here is that he's doing as well as he is as quickly as he is.

Remember in 2009 when they said Grichuk was an overdraft by about 2-3 rounds ?  Good times.

Now he's proven why the Angels drafted him in the 1st round.

The Angels 2009 draft pwns the 2002 Moneyball draft so much.....its so lopsided.

I wonder if Bane is still with the Tigers scouting system.

That 2010 draft sucks but Cowart could still turn out to be something good & there is of course Calhoun.

And his power/swing was still developing..   Dude used to hit moonshot type balls -- now he's ripping line drives..     The evolution was there to see..   Look at his LD drive rate through the minors -- it's been on a steady uptick while his FB and GB rates have been dropping/evening out.

Make sure the minor league stats are listed, click at the top.  And scroll down to his rates -- you'll see a very steady progression.

His LD% and FB% are almost identical to last year.

Difference being

2014: .316 BABIP

2015: .383 BABIP

Sure it's a small sample size, but he definitely seems to be playing over his head.

And you keep ignoring that he's hitting the ball harder.

Look, what he is doing isn't sustainable, but it's a real indication of his skill set.   The progression is obvious.

You are free to write him off, many if not most people here did when he was in AA.   But zeroing in on one stat and ignoring others that are helping the picture come into focus is the wrong way to use stats.

Not writing him off, just think he's playing over his head.

I wasn't only using one stat, but BABIP is a great indicator if someone has been lucky or not. His BABIP is obviously not sustainable. I'm pretty sure you're in agreement with me on that.

I looked at his K % and BB%. Not very encouraging.

Check out players with similar splits and you'll see what I mean.
