Seems like that decision was crossed long ago.  In four weeks, when rosters expand, protecting Featherston is no longer an issue.  I doubt the front office will drop him after protecting him from April- August 2nd when they have only four weeks to go.  Since the season is lost, isn't this about protecting all the younger players.  We might be able to pass some veterans through the waiver wire as trades for some younger guys for the future.
