Scout on Weaver: Mostly 82 w/ fastball, lots of slow curves, location better late, body still getting ahead of his arm in delivery at times.

Agreed on the velocity, and suppose we can chalk the walks up to rust, but between that (guys in high A don't tend to be all that patient against breaking stuff yet) and the hits... would like to see another rehab start before adding him back. Doubt they'll do that though.

So this is what concerns me.

Come playoff time.  Teams will have a Price to wheel out 3 times a series if necessary.  Or a Kershaw.  Or a Scherzer.  In other words, veterans, good veterans.

For the Angels, we have CJ and Weaver.  Richards has never appeared in a playoffs.  And Santiago got rocked last season in his only playoff appearance.

I really think we needed to trade for a vet starting pitcher.

Angels best chance in a playoff series is to run some combination of Richards, Santiago, Shoemaker, and Heaney out. Wilson has a bad history in the postseason (and might be traded by tomorrow night anyway) and Weaver, whom I love dearly, is a shadow of his former self in terms of his actual ability. Weave is still a great competitor with as much heart as any Angels player in the history of the franchise but when you're stuff is failing it shows.

Wouldn't it be something if Heaney turns out to be our best starter this year?

If we had a one game playoff right now, you'd have to seriously think about going with him. The only three who'd even be worth discussing based on recent performance would be Heaney, Shoemaker and Richards.

Didn't this rapid decline happen with his brother too?

Pretty much. Not long ago I described our rotation as follows:

Garrett Richards

CJ Wilson II

Matt Shoemaker

CJ Willson III

Jeff Weaver

CJ Wilson <-- long relief guy

Where Wilson II and Wilson III are Santiago and Heaney, respectively.

No one is pitching a playoff game right now, there is a long way to go until we hit the finish line.......and that's a good thing, a very good thing.  This team has a lot to sort out.
