The Dodgers....

Wow, I knew the their payroll was high, but I had no idea just how exorbitant it is.

Their payroll is DOUBLE our's now

The amount they are over the luxury tax threshold is more than the entire payroll of 13 teams

There is more dead money on the Dodgers payroll ($80-90 million) than roughly five teams are spending on their own payroll.  Their luxury tax will be 40% this year, which should be $40 million or so.

Dead money and luxury tax will be more than about half of the teams in MLB.

The MLB is in major need of a cap. It's not fair that they put in a "kind of" salary cap unless you don't give a damn about money like the Dodgers, it does no good. They can get good players just by eating other teams bad contracts.

That's when it's so much for fun to root for them to fail because of what they're doing.

Of course, if they *do* win, then it's the usual "evil prevails". Just look at the Yankees. =\

Check this out...  http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll/    They have 81 mil worth dead money, their current luxury tax hit is 112 million.

Their dead money and their tax hit dollars (193 million), would rank as the third highest payroll in MLB....... and thats before you throw in the 40% tax hit...

That article sound like the former minister of information pre Iraq invasion cooked it up. So many conflicts of how placing a $120 million over the salary cap is brilliant trading of resources.

How is what they are doing respectable or even okay with the commissioner, it's not fair to the other teams. It shows no creativity, I think it's lazy and the easiest way to build a team.

I don't see anything unfair about it. Their trade partners get to shed payroll in exchange for handing over surplus draft picks. The transaction is fair and beneficial to both parties.

What's lame and anti-competitive is the incentive for teams to tank MLB has created by having slot money for draft signing bonuses so radically increase for every position worse in the standings. Worst overall record gets $8.6M. Second worst gets $7.4M. Tenth worst gets $3.2M. #20 gets $2.2M. All of those teams are just as not-in-the-playoffs as any other. The value of the draft is also artifically inflated by placing draconian luxury taxes on international free agent signings.

These rules encourage teams to go full Astros and tank for multiple season which, spoils the entertainment value of the games in cities like Houston during lengthy rebuild phase, and, IMO makes a mockery of the game. The Dodgers are legally working around rules that should not exist in the first place.
