There are 7 starting pitchers that have a higher ERA than Shoemaker.

Hellickson

Harrison

Kendrick

Garza

Iglesias

Greene

 

And just slipping under Shoemaker by .01 is Walker for Seattle.

 

That is half the league today that doesn't have a option better than our 5th guy in the rotation and the Angels actually have options to replace the old Shoe with a better arm.

 

We are in a good place.

Richards/Santiago/Heaney/Weaver/Nibs = one solid starting 5 if Weaver's month of rest adds just enough speed on his seamers.

The A's hitting stats are pretty decent and they have the lowest ERA in the league. They've been incredibly bad in one-run games though.

If you start Santiago you had better have a well rested and hot bullpen, he's not exactly pitch efficient.

There are in fact 7 starting pitchers in the AL with worse ERA's than Shoemaker, but you listed a bunch of NL guys and pitchers who have thrown less than 30 IP. One of them has thrown 4 innings. I'm honestly going insane trying to figure out how you came up with the list you did.

After researching 2014 vs 2015, it is true that Santiago has averaged around 17 pitches/inning in 2015 vs. 18 pitches/inning in 2014. 

Not really much of an improvement, but he is averaging just over 6 innings per start, up from only around 5 innings per start in 2014.

yet Oakland is a half-game out of the American League cellar ( at present a tie between Seattle and Boston ) . As much as people like to claim that pitching wins championships, it appears you have to have at least some offense to get into the postseason in the first place.
