Terry Smith looks like...

Smith as fine.

Gubi is really good.  No idea why people dislike him so much.

yeah.  I don't mind Gubi at all.  He's kinda captain obvious some times, but he does a pretty good job when the halos are on defense.  He has some good insight about sequencing hitters and pitching mechanics.

I'd like to see them offer a few more stories and personal info about the players and I think they need to work in some interesting graphics and statistics.  They tend to get a little too quiet at times and could fill those gaps with some of the above.  But generally I enjoy listening.

I'm ok with Terry, however his HR calls sound horrible. He sounds desperately in need of a Halls when he gets excited.

His "struck him out" sucks too.

He sucks all around. But when they opened up the telecast yesterday he almost started crying. Then he went into sole stupidity about how he and Gubi have known each other since they were kids in Philly.

Don't make it about you Squidward.

Just fill the shoes quietly.

Driving home from L.A. yesterday (Sunday).  Took my brother-in-law's kids to the California Science Center.

Anyway caught the tail-end of the Angels game with Lodge and Langston on the radio.  Of course Lodge was awful but he was trying hard.  The chemistry wasn't really there between Lodge and Langston.  Maybe Langston thought he could have done a better PBP than Lodge.  He's probably right.

well, the only thing I would complain about Terry Smith being on the TV broadcast is that it means Roger Lodge is doing play by play on the radio site -- now that has to be a nightmare!!! Glad I missed that.

As for Terry Smith, I think he's fine on the radio and enjoyed him doing the TV broadcast in Victor Rojas' absence.

Look, we had Phyz and Hud on the TV broadcast for years -- now I didn't mind them and would have been OK with keeping them around -- but have to admit -- Victor Rojas has been an upgrade.

Oh course, Phyz and Hud are now in KC and things seem to be going pretty well for that franchise.

Lot of mentions here of Bob Starr -- yeah, he was good (did LA Rams broadcasts as well, of course, Starr also did some Boston Red Sox pbp way back) -- I liked it when the vet pbp guy Starr was teamed with the up and comer Mario Impemba -- that didn't last long due to Starr's untimely death -- but was a good combo while it lasted.

Al Conin?? He was pretty weak (and I liked most announcers).......Conin, apparently, is out of the broadcast biz and still around living in S. Cal -- saw a letter to the editor (I think it was LA Times sports pages) that he wrote a few years back commenting on something..............might have been ten years ago when I saw that -- time flies.

Enberg going strong in San Diego........perhaps the fact his home is in La Jolla sealed the deal (and Enberg joined the broadcast team there before Jerry Coleman left the broadcast team, although Coleman's work load was cut way down after he turned 80).......but the Halos really missed a beat when they didn't even try to lure him back -- at least for home games.

Saw Enberg in Spring Training (we had seats at Peoria Ballpark near the press box) when he walked past to get to the booth -- he looks good -- has to be 75 or so now.

My favorite part of Under the Halo was his story about hearing that the Angels finally won the WS during a plane ride.

Goosebumps.

I don't mind Smith, I like Langston. I like the chemistry between Victor and Gubi, but I'm not a big fan of Gubi. Victor is great. He calls a good game, he's critical when he sees fit, and he's witty when the game isn't all that interesting.

In the past we had bad ones, Hud and Phys were awful and vanilla. I don't remember Al Wisk, but I liked Bob Star and what I can remember of Al Conin. I really liked Sutton and Impemba. I'm too young to remember Enberg and Drysdale but they are universally considered the best we've had.

Wait, why is everyone saying Terry was almost in tears? Did something happen?

I mean usually you don't see Terry on TV.

Yes the OP was in regards to the first game he did as TV. When they came out to the two shot, he had a huge grin on his face, and looked like he was going to cry. Then, he made it all about him, without mentioning Victor (a cardinal sin in the world of TV talent) and went on to say how much he Loves Gubi and how they've been buddies since they were kids in Philly. Gomer Gubi then added "yep, you were friends with my brother."

I agree with all of it.

Terry Smith reminds me of Hacksaw Reynolds- a white dude without a wacky sense of humor who takes sports seriously. He's the opposite of the Jim Rome type. Between the two types, I'd take Reynolds, as they wear better over time.

Do you mean Lee Hacksaw Hamilton?

Don Drysdale:

One story that stuck in my brain was when the human rain delay (Mike Hargrove) came to bat, Don stated that pitchers like Whitey Ford would have thrown one at his ear if he would have been pitching.  I got the feeling Don wouldn't put up with that crap either.  I wondered at the time why he wasn't the Angels pitching coach.

I remember Don being on the Dodgers broadcasts when I was a teenager and just remember how awful of an interviewer he was. He would ask a question then answer the question for the guy then ask, "Was that the way you saw it?". I was just a kid and I knew he was awful at interviewing.

yes. The guy Rome made fun of. I see why Rome made fun of him, but most of the time, I like his seriousness to Rome's constant goofing. Anyways, Terry is like Hamilton to me,

Lee Butterknife Hamilton couldn't stand Ted Leitner back in the 1990s.   Lots of salvos back and forth

"Down that, firefighter!"
