It's not simply about gun ownership as it is somebody possessing the gun at the time and scene of the incident. Plus the person who is carrying has to be willing to use it. Easier said than done.

I really don't own guns for crime prevention. I don't think I'd have the time to undo all the safety precautions I have in place to load and shoot some jackass that I felt threatened by. So any argument that I should give up my guns because they would be ineffective as a deterrent misses the point as to why I own them.

For cons, guns are a right that trumps nearly everything. For libs, love trumps marriage demographics, religion, children, and logic considerations. You can really only argue things when you have a common goal or point of reference. IOW, these arguments are only useful for people interested in another point of view, and are useless in convincing most people.
