there was a giant amnesty plan that was discussed a few years ago (was mccain one of the sponsors?), but nothing was ever put into action. a lot of people balked at the idea of giving amnesty to 13 million illegals. there was talk of having them move to the head of the line (some phrase like that) and paying a fine plus taxes, and then being on a fast track to citizenship.

honestly, i think we're at a point where we need to do something like this soon. nothing is being done, and the process is still lengthy. meanwhile, our borders are still a giant sieve.

After so many years here in the middle east, our immigration policies make perfect sense to me. In all the middle eastern countries the expat population outnumbers the natives. Among these expats is a bottom of the barrel class that works for just over $100 a month plus room and board in facilities that can barely be called "housing". They are poor people from other countries who managed to scrape together an agency fee and send a family member to a rich Arab country to support their entire family. They work 70 hour weeks and spend their off time looking to wash cars or do whatever menial jobs they can get to supplement their income.

This dirt-cheap labor allows these countries to function at a far lower labor cost than a developed country can handle. Other places like China, India, etc, e their labor class indigenous. By having this huge group of "illegals" we have a class of people on whose rights we can trample and have our own unskilled labor class. They can't sue and they can't strike. We may have outlawed slavery but we didn't outlaw the desire for slave labor.
