Teacher resigns after reading students book about gay couple

Recommended Posts

Lets look at it this way -

Say there is a kid with a learning disability or speech impediment and some of the kids in the class are calling him a retard.  The teacher uses it as a learning experience and reads a book about kids with learning disabilities.  Is that so inappropriate?  How is that different from this situation?

Neither keeps the kid from getting beaten up once story time with delusional teacher ends. Bullying assholes don't learn from storybook parables.

I have two sons, one is 21 and gay. He has always been a big kid, he is about 6'2" 230lbs. He never got bullied (never been in a fight) even though he was gay, probably because of his size and he is likable. My other son is a little socially awkward, really smart kid. He is tall and very skinny, and just looks like he hasn't grown into his body yet. He is 5 years younger than his brother, but they use to always wrestle and such growing up. Now he has been picked on a bit and has been in two or three fights and each time he has come out on the winning side or he got the best of the other kid. My guess is they underestimate him because hs is so skinny, but he is that wirey strong. Just weird that one gets picked on while the other gets left alone. Oh and kids are assholes, you just need to teach your kids to be thick skinned or at least be able to stand up for themselves.

Don't think I would have taken his approach to the situation but the biggest problem is we live in the land of "public outcry" and "outraged parents." Either people need to chill or we should just start burning people at the stake and get it over with.

Response to nate in this thread:

Response to me in the Duggar thread:

Disagreeing with MT = "hate".

Kudos for the consistency though.

maybe you should find every thread where I have disagreed with someone (thousands) and see how often I post something like that (maybe 5 times tops)

or maybe I hit a little too close to home.  Besides, I am not the only one to post that in this thread.

Poor attempt.

So what is the appropriate response?

i think the appropriate response is to pull the student who used the slur and have a serious talk with him about what he said and why it's not okay.

if it's a widespread problem with several kids in the class, then you look to have a class solution, like some kind of sensitivity lesson or about bullying in different forms. and by all means, make sure your administrator and your parents are on board with something like that.

reading a book about two gay princes falling in love simply because one kid in your class called another kid gay seems a bit heavy-handed.

My Aunt and Uncle have gone to Hot August Nights every year for the last 20 years or so.  They will be there again in their '64 Ford Falcon Sprint.  I got to go once, it was incredible.

I was about 4 years old when my brother tells me Dad bought a new car with bucket seats. I was thinking he had to be wrong, you can't sit in a bucket and drive a car. Out in the driveway is a new 1963 white four door Ford Falcon with a turquoise vinyl interior and sure enough my brother was lying to me, there were no buckets.

Just a damn boring car.

I know, Dad's Falcon was an automatic with a straight six. Boring as hell. He traded it in for a '66 Mercury Colony Park station wagon that had a 411Mercury Maurader V-8 with the 4 barrel carb towing package. It still had vinyl seats.

It's the agenda where in a free society you may come across people who are different and most you probably won't agree with or even like but you'll just roll your eyes, make a comment under your breath then get on with your own life.

This is a fair comment. I expect that when teachers read about gay people who converted to straight or children who live with a gay couple missing mom/dad or something similar, you'll say the same thing. Because we know that some people think homosexual sex is wrong and we should hear their stories as well.
