Anybody know anything about Haggen?

Recommended Posts

Went to one today in Tustin. It was empty and nothing special. Not low end, but not high end. Was like a Von's, I guess.

They just opened one by my house (used to be Von's). They seem to be a little more expensive than Von's was and they don't hava club card. More organic fruit and a better butcher. We might start going to Ralph's because it's cheaper.

Makes me wonder what the point is.

I have both a Vons and an Albertsons in my neighborhood, and neither of them is being converted over to Haggen. I read that there are seven stores in the Las Vegas area being changed over (it has something to do with divestiture over the Albertsons/Safeway merger). I might go to one just to check it out, but this doesn't sound all that encouraging.

I think Abertsons/Safeway was ordered to sell some of their stores because of the merger. Haggens bought them. I thought I read Haggens was a mix of Whole Foods and Trader Joes. We have one here but when I went to check it out, it just looked like a normal grocery store to me.

They pitch themselves as having natural, organic foods combined with a large selection of national brands - pretty much Whole Foods or Trader Joe's along with the stuff that you would normally have to go elsewhere to buy. Their website says that they try to use locally sourced items - which is going to be interesting here, because unless they are going to sell cactus I don't know what they are going to find. We can't grow anything here.

When I pass through the agricultural checkpoint on I-15 in California, they see the Nevada tag and just wave me through. They know that if I have any produce I bought it at the grocery store.

My neighbors daughter works at the recently converted Haggen by our house. She told us that it will be a few more months before it's completely haggenized. It's just your basic grocery store from my perspective. I've heard the same whole foods comparison. They're closing the Chase branch that was part of the Albertsons, which is a bummer.

Is she cute?
