BOSOX: loaded with OF in need of SP

Recommended Posts

The Red Sox have more outfielders than they can play and then took another college outfielder in the first round of the draft.  They are getting desperate for starting pitching.

Which of these guys do you want and who are they most likely to give up?  I think they are most likely to trade Bradley, but he's not really a solution for the Angels.

50 Mookie Betts R-R 5'9" 180 Oct 7, 1992

25 Jackie Bradley Jr. * L-R 5'10" 200 Apr 19, 1990

73 Bryce Brentz * R-R 6'0" 210 Dec 30, 1988

38 Rusney Castillo R-R 5'9" 195 Jul 9, 1987

31 Alejandro De Aza L-L 6'0" 195 Apr 11, 1984

29 Daniel Nava icon_dl.gif15-day DL * S-L 5'11" 200 Feb 22, 1983

13 Hanley Ramirez R-R 6'2" 225 Dec 23, 1983

18 Shane Victorino icon_dl.gif15-day DL * R-R 5'9" 190 Nov 30, 1980

They won't trade Betts, at least not for what the Angels would be willing to part with. The same with Castillo. They'd trade everyone else, but Bradley is all-glove, no-bat; Brentz looks like a scrub/career AAA type; Victorino seems done and is making $13M this year. Hanley Ramirez is overrated and a terrible defender - he's on the verge of being a $22M a year DH. Nava and de Aza are bench players.

Unless the Red Sox are willing to part with Betts or Castillo, which is highly doubtful, I don't see a trade happening.

Ramirez and Sandoval have really been busts for the Red Sox. Consider:

Ramirez has a solid .272/.339/.479 line, but consider that his fWAR is -0.4 largely because his defense is awful. Also, of his 13 HR, only 3 have been hit since May 1. From May 1 to the present he's hit .260/.310/.366 with 3 HR in 142 PA.

Sandoval is worse - he's hitting .236/.308/.356 with a -0.2 fWAR. Four and a half more years?

Bradley, as an all-glove guy, is hitting a nice .325/.384/.465 in Pawtucket.
