Also, the best of the rear engine Fiat's is the 1970 Fiat 500 Abarth.  They made the motor so big they couldn't close the trunk lid over it so they came up with an "open engine" design.  This is what the race version looked like:

The Fiat 1000 Abarth that was modified by Al Cosentino back in the 1960's was the best of the series and he won so many SCCA events they tried to ban him and his cars. He was a bit of a mad man and owned parts supply for FIAT modifications called FAZA.

Hah, no, you really wouldn't. They almost make VW's look sophisticated. My best friend had a FIAT 600 which essentially is a 500 with a larger motor. It even had the suicide doors and a rag roof. He bought it for $500 with the trans in the back seat and put it together on a shoestring budget, painting it with cans of Krylon. A little sandpaper and polish and it wasn't too bad from 10 feet away. Drove like a 40 year old car and was slow as hell.

He also restored a FIAT 1300 Abarth Coupe. This was a complete every nut and bolt job where he went as far as to find the correct hose clamps rather than using the standard Pep Boys aircraft clamps. The Abarth engineering... not so great. It was hella loud to drive and the exhaust came from crazy AL Cosentino that stockpiled Abarth parts.

When he went through the engine, that was running when he bought it, he found these very special S type racing push rods.

The previous owner had driven it for a couple of years with the valve this bent and just thought it was something loose in the rear.

Cute car and also rear engine.
