Angels among teams scouting Eddy Martinez

• The Giants were among the clubs to scout 20-year-old Cuban center fielder Eddy Julio Martinez in the Dominican Republic recently, reports MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez (AllTwitter links). At this time, the Giants, Yankees, Angels, Blue Jays, Nationals,Rockies, Tigers and Dodgers are all in the mix for Martinez. One scout placed the lofty comp of a young Andruw Jones on Martinez, Sanchez adds, though clearly not every scout will be quite that bullish. Martinez is expected to work out for more clubs this week and is eligible to sign at any time.

yeah -- anyone they sign now they will pay double for...  But we are already over the limit and the penalties are already set for the next two years.   They have nothing to lose.

You gotta infuse offense into this minor league system, so yeah, go after the kid. Let's just hope that if they do sign him, perhaps he can join Baldoquin and they can sort of help each other feel more comfortable.

Speaking of Baldoquin, what kind of injury is he nursing? When is he due back?

It's a lat injury and no timetable has been provided. I've had a mild lat strain before. It's debilitating for a couple days, you don't notice it too much after that unless you're doing intense physical activity like crossfit or in Baldoquin's case baseball. The only thing they can actually do for it is some resistance training, stretch it and massage it. It took about 6 weeks, maybe 8 before it was completely gone and I didn't notice it any more.

Just a guess based off my experience and when Baldoquin got hurt, I think he makes his return in the next 2-4 weeks.

I too have pulled a lat muscle. I felt it for 6-8 weeks before it finally went away on its own.

Moncada landed in Boston. Huge gamble for the Red Sox, but I think it will pay off. We need to be more aggressive this year because in 2 months, we lose the ability to sign a player for over $300k for two years. I wouldn't go Moncada money, but I'd go past Baldoquin money if need be.

I'd still like to see us sign him, but, the guy from Baseball America just gave a very different report on him. Again, just one person's opinion and even he says scouts are mixed on Martinez.

Scouts were mixed on Baldoquin too.  Heck, there has to be some differing reports on Tayler Ward, the Angels newest 1st round pick.  They were ecstatic to sign him, the rest of baseball doesn't understand why.

 

I gotta think that since the Angels scouted him, they already know by now whether or not they're going to sign him.  But it's more likely he'll be waiting for July 2nd and then taking a bigger paycheck than what the Angels may offer.
