He couldn't pull off because Trout waited to the last two strides to call for it. At full speed he isn't slamming on the brakes or veering off in time. 

 

You center fielder needs to signal it is his ball sooner or he will get himself killed. No outfielder will just stand and wait for Trout to get there every time.
