Gondola cable cut in Canada, sending cars crashing to the ground in 'deliberate act,' police say

Several gondola cars came crashing to the ground early Saturday in British Columbia after someone apparently cut the cable, according to Canadian officials.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a news release that employees at the Sea to Sky Gondola noticed a cable down and saw several gondolas on the ground around 7:00 a.m. After an initial assessment of the situation by employees, the RCMP was contacted and are currently treating the incident as "criminal in nature."

"We believe the cables were cut and this was a deliberate act of vandalism," RCMP Inspector Kara Triance told CBC News. "At this time, it's a crime scene."

The gondola operator said in a statement that they received an alert at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday that a haul rope had fallen for the Sea to Sky Gondola and the lift was inoperable.

"No guests or staff were on the gondola and no injuries were sustained in the incident," Sea to Sky Gondola said.

New US Army soldier gets first haircut in 15 years to join military

Reynaldo Arroyo, 23, recently got a haircut for the first time in 15 when he recently enlisted with the U.S. Army.

This overdue haircut was worth it to be able to serve.

A newly enlisted soldier recently cut his hair for the first time in 15 years in order to join the U.S. Army.

The Missoula U.S. Army Recruiting Station said Friday on Facebook that Reynaldo Arroyo enlisted as an 11X infantryman with airborne option.

"People often tell us that they would have joined the Army but...well Future Soldier Arroyo has been growing his hair for 15 years and yesterday he decided to donate it to the Locks of Love foundation in exchange for a brighter future and the opportunity to become one of the most elite war fighters on this planet," the Army said.

The 23-year-old ended up donating 150 inches of hair to Locks of Love, which is an organization that provides high-quality hairpieces for children who need them.

Washington man reports his truck stolen — while he was robbing a store nearby, police say

Police say a man in Washington reported his truck was stolen — as he happened to be nearby allegedly robbing a store himself.

William Kelley called authorities on Sunday around 6 a.m. to report that he left his keys on the seat of his red 1992 Chevrolet pickup truck in Kennewick, a city roughly 140 miles southwest of Spokane, and "someone just stole it."

Kelley said he saw a man riding a bicycle who "discovered the keys and then threw his back bike in the bed of the truck and fled," according to a Facebook post from the Kennewick Police Department.

Fisherman catches strange, 'dinosaur-like' creature

Oscar Lundahl claims that despite its ugly appearance, the fish was actually quite tasty.

Oscar Lundahl claims that his colleague identified the creature as a ratfish, a relative to the shark that is rarely caught.

A fisherman in Norway was shocked when he reeled in a bizarre, alien-looking creature from the water. The strange animal had large bulbous eyes that made it look like something truly out of this world.

Oscar Lundahl nearly “jumped out of his fishing boat” when he pulled the strange creature into his boat, The Sun reported. Photos of the fish revealed its large eyes and comparatively small body.

Lundahl, a fishing guide for Nordic Sea Angling, was reportedly fishing for blue halibut off the coast of the island of Andoya in Norway when he made the catch. He was fishing in 2,600 feet below the surface at the time.

He told The Sun, “We were looking for blue halibut which is a rare species about 5 miles offshore. I had four hooks on one line and felt something quite big on the end of it. It took me about 30 minutes to reel it in because it was over 2,600 feet deep.”

The strange-looking fish wasn’t his only catch of the day. He said, “There were two halibut on two of the hooks and I was really happy about that and then I saw there was something else. It was pretty amazing. I have never seen anything like it before. It just looked weird, a bit dinosaur-like. I didn't know what it was but my colleague did.”

The fish was reported to be a ratfish, a relative of the shark that reportedly dates back 300 million years, per The Sun. They live in deep water and apparently very rarely caught.

Lundahl claims that due to the extreme change in pressure, the ratfish didn’t survive the experience. Not wanting to waste it, Lundahl claimed that he took the fish home and fried it up. Despite its ugly appearance, "it was really tasty,” he told The Sun. “It is a bit like cod but tastier.”

'Like a whole new dog'

One 11-pound Shih Tzu had 9 pounds of matted hair removed from her tiny body after being rescued by the Nebraska Humane Society (NHS) in one of “the worst” needs for a haircut the shelter had ever seen.

The neglected 11-year-old pooch, named Ellie Mae, was carried into the Omaha shelter in a storage tote as she couldn’t walk due to her immense tangle of “smelly, hideous” hair and knotted, 7-inch nails, the animal rescue revealed in a Sept. 13 blog post.

Last Friday, the animal rescue shared the sweet comeback story following “the worst” need for a haircut they’d ever seen to Facebook, where it has since gone viral with over 4,000 likes and more than 1,000 shares.

"[Extreme matting is] kind of like having a blood pressure cuff completely inflated all the time on your arm. That's how she felt constantly all over her body," shelter groomer Jenna Baseler explained.

Before the experts could get to work cleaning her up, Ellie Mae was anesthetized and given a breathing tube, WOWT reported. It took one hour to remove the matted hair – that weighed nearly as much as the dog did – and cut back her 7-inch nails covered in “hair, feces, and years of grit,” according to the NHS.

The veterinary team soon discovered that the miniature dog also had one infected foot and needed dental work, hernia surgery and antibiotics to fight further infection.

Nevertheless, five hours after the procedure, the brave dog took her first steps outside — and was delighted to do so.

Hiker airlifted to hospital after bison attack at Utah park, was reportedly trying to warn friend

A 22-year-old woman had to be airlifted to a hospital on Friday after she was charged by bison at a state park in Utah and sustained multiple injuries to her legs, according to officials.

The incident happened at Antelope Island State Park around 7:30 p.m., located northwest of Salt Lake City.

Utah State Parks Lt. Eric Stucki said the woman sustained a broken leg and laceration to her other leg, possibly due to being gored, after she was charged and thrown into the air by the animal.

The woman, who has not been identified, was on a trail and heading toward a companion when the incident took place.

Stucki told KSL-TV the woman was hiking when she spotted the bison about 50 yards away and tried to warn her friend about the animal because she knew her companion was uncomfortable around them.

The bison, however, charged the woman and threw her into the air. The animal then nudged the woman with its nose as she remained still on the ground before moving off, according to Stucki.

Stucki told FOX13 the woman was flown to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, but her injuries are not life-threatening.

Officials are warning visitors who visit the park that bison roam freely, and they should keep their distance as the animals can be aggressive.

Wildlife on Antelope Island include hundreds of bison. The state park is connected to the Great Salt Lake's southeastern shore by a 7-mile-long causeway.

Alice Todd, center, allegedly swapped her child to Tina Chavis and Vicenio Mendoza for a 1992 Plymouth Laser, according to investigators.

North Carolina mom, 2 others arrested after they allegedly swapped child for car

Three people were arrested in North Carolina on Wednesday after the mother of a 2-year-old girl allegedly traded her daughter to a couple for their car.

Alice Todd, 45, allegedly swapped her own child for a 1992 Plymouth Laser — owned by Tina Chavis, 47, and Vicenio Mendoza, 53 — in 2018. The toddler was brought into a hospital in July with bruises, prompting a police investigation.

Chavis, according to Lexington's The Dispatch newspaper, told investigators that she was the child's mother. She then changed her story, allegedly claiming she was the child's adopted mother, but couldn't provide any such paperwork.

The child was placed into the care of a family member. Authorities said Todd gave the child to Chavis and Romero in exchange for a vehicle.

Neighbor Loretta Poole told WGHP she saw Chavis and Romero with the child frequently.

"I'd see them out on the porch. She really took care of the kid," she said.

The three were indicted Monday and charged with unlawful sale, surrender or purchase of a minor and jailed under a $50,000 bond each. They're scheduled to appear in court Oct. 21.

New Jersey man allegedly threatened farmers who denied him sex with animals

A New Jersey man was arrested for asking local farmers permission to have sex with their animals — and then threatening the farmers and damaging their cars when refused, a report said.

Richard Decker, 31, began sending the messages to Sussex County farms and horse stables in 2018, asking the animal caregivers if he could have sex with their cows and horses, the New Jersey Herald reported.

When he was rejected by the farmers, Decker allegedly sent threats and placed homemade metal spikes on their driveways to damage their tires, according to the report.

In one case, he threatened to beat a farmer’s wife with a wooden stick when denied permission.

Several of the property owners reported their tires had been damaged by the spikes.

Decker was arrested in Vernon Township on Oct. 3 after police searched his home.
